Looking Back

Wausau had a couple close calls, but the Huskies managed to remain atop the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference with a pair of wins last weekend. The team trailed Barron at halftime on Friday at the Champions Center in Appleton but rallied to score a narrow 52-49 victory. Patience Pyan (Merrill HS) scored a game-high 23 points, while Kateri Hackel (Edgar HS) had an astounding 28 rebounds. It was another comeback victory on Saturday, as the Huskies trailed Fox Cities headinginto the fourth quarter before rallying for a 67-52 win. Pyan poured in 42 points in that one, while Brittany Ange (Athens HS) chipped in 12 points and 17 rebounds.

Earlier in the week, Fox Cities had to go to overtime to get past Washington, 37-34, as the team got a game-high 14 points from Lilly Schaefer (Fox Valley Lutheran HS).

Barron is one of the most improved teams in the league this season after not winning a game last year. In addition to taking league-leading Wausau down to the end, the Chargers topped Washington 55-52. Brandi Gauthier (Bruce HS) had 23 points to go with six steals. With Richland and Marinette canceling second semester, it is likely the Chargers will finish second in the league standings.

Looking Ahead

The regular season is already starting to wind down, with only a handful of games remaining on the schedule. Just two are set for the next week. Tonight, an improving Barron squad welcomes in Marshfield, who won its last game against Washington.

Speaking of Barron and Washington, those two teams will tussle at Washington on Saturday. The Wildcats of Washington have just one league win this season, but have been much more competitive in the second semester. In addition to a close loss on Saturday against Barron, the Wildcats have competitive defeats to Fox Cities and Marshfield.

WCC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: PATIENCE PYAN, WAUSAU

Patience Pyan (Merrill HS) leads the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference in scoring by a good margin, and has continued to add to her total. She poured in 23 points with nine rebounds in a win Friday over Barron, then scored a season-high 42 on Saturday as the Huskies rallied to beat Fox Cities 67-52. Pyan is up to 26 points per game this year for league-leading Wausau. This is her second Player of the Week honor.
