Updated Football State Record Book following 2019 season

Racine Lutheran's Tyler Tenner broke the state's all-time career rushing record in 2019

The 2019 high school football season was another one for the record books, as a number of players and teams etched their names in history.

Kevin Patrowsky keeps the State Record Book for the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association and has provided an updated 65-page document that is chock full of great information. Also, he's again added on to the 8-Man Football Record Book. For any updates, additions, or corrections to the Record Book, please contact Kevin Patrowsky.

Below are some of the noteworthy additions to the Record Book from 2019.

2019 Additions to 11-Player State Record Book

Passing Updates

  • Palmyra-Eagle's Brandon Wilde threw for 489 yards in a loss to Waterloo, placing him in the top 30 for single-game passing yards. Lake Mills' Adam Moen had 470 yards in a game, as he's just outside the top 30.
  • Speaking of Moen, his 3,517 passing yards for the season are the fourth-most in state history. Waukesha West's Brooks Blount's is in the top 20 all-time with 3,148 yards.
  • Moen also set a new record for most combined passing and rushing yards with 4,477 (3,517 passing, 960 rushing), breaking the previous record held by Cedar Grove-Belgium's Josh Weiss.
  • On the career passing list, Mineral Point's Isaac Lindsey is eighth with 7,467 yards. Johnny Davis of La Crosse Central, Johnny Kelliher of Waukesha North, and Brandon Wilde of Palmyra-Eagle also moved into the top 30.
  • Linsey also moved into fifth on the career passing touchdowns list with 85. 

Rushing Updates

  • Undoubtedly the biggest news was Racine Lutheran's Tyler Tenner breaking the state record for career rushing yards with 6,932, edging out Iola-Scandinavia's Bryce Huettner, who set the record just last year.
  • Southern Door's Nick Baudhuin posted the 31st game in state history with at least 400 yards, as his 403 are tied for 24th.
  • West De Pere junior Josh Blount ran for 393 yards in a win over Menasha, the fourth-highest rushing total for a quarterback in state history. Abbotsford's Dalton Feddick had 354 yards in a game to tie for seventh.
  • HOPE Christian's Malcom Gillie set a new state record for highest single-game rush average (minimum 10 carries) when he ran it 10 times for 356 yards and a 35.6 yard per carry average.
  • Jefferson's Jeffery Zeh moved to sixth on the list of highest average yards per carry in a season (1000 yards minimum), as he averaged 14 yards per attempt with 129 carries for 1,811 yards.

Receiving Updates

  • Cumberland's Jack Martens hauled in 19 passes in a game, tying him for second in the state record book. Mosinee's Drayton Lehman is now tied for fourth with 18 receptions in a single-game.
  • Martens caught 94 passes this year, placing him 12th on the single-season list. Danny Hammond of Palmyra-Eagle (83), Matt Johnson of Lake Mills (82), and Hunter Buechel of Lake Mills (78) are all in the top 25 as well.
  • Waukesha North's Chimere Dike moved to a tie for third place on the state's career receptions list with 206. He's also fifth in career receiving yards with 3,033.

Scoring Updates

  • Bangor's Carter Horstman scored 37 touchdowns with three, two-point conversions, as his 228 total points are tied for 17th on the state's single-season list.
  • G-E-T's Bryce Burns tied a single-game record with four, two-point conversion runs, which he accomplished twice.
  • Burns also set a new record with 23 successful two-point conversions in 2019.
  • The career record for two-point conversions now belongs to Burns as well, with 40.
  • Lake Mills' Adam Moen moved into second place for all-purpose touchdowns by a quarterback with 60 total touchdowns (39 passing, 21 rushing).
  • Racine Lutheran's Tyler Tenner moved to fourth on the career scoring list with 622 points (102 touchdowns; five, two-point conversions).
  • Hortonville's Jayqon Owens tied the state record with four kickoff return touchdowns in a single-season.
  • DeForest's Deven Magli returned four interceptions for touchdowns, putting him into a tie for second in the state record book.

Kicking Updates

  • Bay Port's Austin Hein set a new state record with 93 made extra points this season. He attempted 94. Heim's 96 total kicking points are fourth on the single-season list.
  • West De Pere's Sawyer Grovogel made 81-of-82 to put him third on the single-season list.
  • Grovogel is second in made extra points in a career with 208. Lourdes Academy's Tyler Johnsen is fifth with 189, while Hein and Racine Lutheran's David Voss also moved into the top ten.
  • Johnsen is tied for second in career kicking points with 243 (207 extra points, 18 field goals).

Punting Updates

  • N/A

Defense Updates

  • Frankin's Gavin Meyer moved into second on the carer sack list with 43.

Team Updates

  • It was the year of scoring, as four teams averaged more than 50 points per game in the regular season: Stratford (53.3; fifth place), Bangor (51.8; eighth), Bay Port (50.4; ninth), and West De Pere (50.2; tenth).
  • For full season scoring, Bay Port's 48.3 points per game is third all-time. Stratford's 47.3 is ninth.
  • Stratford posted a new record of 12 shutouts in a single-season.

2019 ADDITIONS TO 8-Player STATE RECORD BOOK

With the current incarnation of 8-Player Football still being very young, there were a significant number of additions to the Record Book this season.

Newman Catholic's Ben Bates missed several games during his senior season but still owns the most career passing yards by a wide margin with 7,030. He also holds records for career completions, attempts, and touchdowns.

Siren's Jordan Webster, Northwood/Solon Springs' Jeffrey Mehling, and Shell Lake's Nick Kraetke are also in the top ten in career passing yards and top five in career passing touchdowns.

Several players moved into the top 20 in single-game passing yards: Alma Center Lincoln's Jack Anderson threw for 398 yards and 340 yards this year, while Siren's Jordan Webster threw for 344.

Anderson finished the year with 2,630 yards, good for third all-time. Ozur Kepler of Wisconsin Heights is fourth, while Ben Bates of Newman Catholic had the fifth-most yards. Bates' junior season total is best in state history.

Ten of the top 30 passing performances in 8-player history occurred in 2019 as the sport grew and many teams transitioned to wide open offenses.

Kepler threw 36 touchdowns in 2019, good for third place on the single-season list. Bates and Oakfield's Grant Bass are also in the top 20.

Luck's Levi Jensen had a huge season, including 432 rushing yards in the 8-player state championship game, tying for third-most in a single-game in state history.

Suring's Logan Stuart ran for 2,453 yards this season, the second-most in 8-player history. Jensen, Belmont's Riley Christiansen, Newman Catholic's Thomas Bates, and Siren's Cordell Fisher also had rushing totals that place in the top 20. 

Fisher finished his career with 3,196 rushing yards, good for third all-time.

Underclassmen Alex Laughlin of Gibraltar and Charlie McCarty of Newman Catholic are the top two in state history in career receptions with opportunities to add to it next year. Joe Stephan of Newman Catholic moved into third in career receptions.

Port Edwards' Alex Hernandez set a new mark with 324 receiving yards in a game, while Saint Mary Catholic/Valley Christian's Sam Vosters had 299 receiving yards in a game, placing him third. 

Newman Catholic's Charlie McCarty set new records with 18 receptions in a game as well as 91 receptions on the season. Alma Center Lincoln's Justin Rowekamp caught 73 passes, placing him third on the single-season list. McCarty's 1,305 receiving yards is second. Rowekamp's 18 receiving touchdowns is also second.

McCarty also set a new 8-player record with 66 made extra points.

Port Edwards' Quintan Tranel twice had three defensive interceptions in a game, tying a state record. He also tied the state record with nine interceptions on the season.

Logan Stuart of Suring set several new records on defense. His 30 tackles in a game is a new record, as is 162 tackles for the season.

Levi Jensen of Luck now holds the record for most career tackles with 392.

Luck's season total of 722 points is the second-most in state 8-player history.
