Alumni Update

Basketball season is slowly winding down across the state of Wisconsin. A little over a week is all that remains of the 2019-20 regular season in high school boys basketball. Not only is high school ball coming to an end, but the college basketball season is in its final weeks around the country.

With a win Thursday, UW-Platteville clinched the WIAC regular season title. Last week though, they pulled off two conference wins behind the play of Kiel High School’s Carter Voelker to help ensure that title. In a 70-68 squeaker over UW-Whitewater, Carter scored 21 points. Kyle Tuma of Valders and Blake McCann of Janesville Craig added double digit scoring outputs. Carter then had 30 points and six assists in a 95-54 win over UW-River Falls. Laconia’s Drew Gunnink added 19 points in the win. Carter was named the WIAC Player of the Week as he lead the Pioneers to conference superiority.

In speaking of player of the week winners, a pair of Division 2 athletes garnered those laurels this past week.

First, Kyle Monroe has had an incredible college career with Michigan Tech. The Ashwaubenon grad etched his name in school history this past week, breaking the all-time scoring record as the Huskies beat Lake Superior State 69-63. Kyle scored 16 points in the win after notching 31 in a 76-71 loss to Ferris State earlier in the week. He sits at 2,376 points in his illustrious career. For his record-breaking performance, Kyle was named the GLIAC’s Player of the Week for the sixth time this season.

Like Monroe, Brandon Myer has been incredible in his four years at Minnesota Duluth. This past week Myer, a Superior High School grad, scored 31 points and hauled in eight rebounds in an 85-73 loss to Northern State. He then had a career high 45 points in a 99-86 win over Minnesota State-Moorhead. Brandon added 14 points, five assists, and four steals. Myer, who has scored over 1,800 points in his career was named the Northern Sun Player of the Week for the fourth time this season.

Chris Knight may not have over 2,000 or 1,800 career points, but the Madison Memorial did cross the 1,000 point career mark this past week. First in Dartmouth’s 65-63 win over Columbia, Chris had 23 points on 10 of 11 shooting. He followed that up with 17 points, on eight of ten shooting, and 10 rebounds in a 75-53 win over Cornell. For the week, Chris shot 18 of 21 from the field for a blistering 85%.

Concordia-Wisconsin’s Jordan Johnson already surpassed the 1,000 point mark earlier this season. Last week, the Cedarburg grad scored a career high 33 points in a 102-94 win over Wisconsin Lutheran. He added four rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. Jordan followed that up with 31 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in an 88-77 win over MSOE. For the second consecutive week in a row, Jordan was named the NACC Player of the Week.

Two years ago Patrick Cartier was making a game-winning shot against Sun Prairie to propel Brookfield East to the Division 1 state championship. This past week he was filling up stat sheets for Hillsdale College. In an 84-74 win over Walsh College, Patrick had 17 points, 11 rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. He followed that up with 20 points and seven rebounds in a 79-67 win over Ohio Dominican.

Lastly, Terrence Lewis and Alondes Williams were teammates at Milwaukee Riverside three years ago. Now the two are Big 12 foes as Lewis plays for Iowa State and Williams for Oklahoma. Last week Williams and Oklahoma downed the Cyclones 90-61. Alondes had 14 points and six rebounds for the winning Sooners. Terrence had a team high 17 points off the bench for Iowa State. With both being juniors, Lewis and Williams, once teammates, will square off as rivals a few more times in their collegiate careers.
