Many high school basketball standouts in Wisconsin go on to big things at the college level and in the pros, and this is our spot to recognize those athletes each week and help you keep up with what is going down on some of your favorite players from the past. If you have alumni news, please send it to Colton Wilson by 6 p.m. on Tuesdays.

Alumni Update

Just like that, the regular season and come to a conclusion in Division 2 and 3 college basketball. Just like in high school basketball, many college athletes are playing or have played their final possessions of collegiate ball. Others are gearing up for a postseason push.

Minnesota Duluth’s Brandon Myer has been mentioned many times in past iterations of the Alumni Round-up, and for good reason. The Superior High School grad has been phenomenal in his senior year, ending the regular season on a high note. In a 90-84 overtime win over Minnesota Crookston, Brandon had 44 points and 13 rebounds. He followed that up with 40 points and 17 rebounds in an 83-76 loss to Bemidji State.

Brandon’s back-to-back 40 point outputs led to him being named the Northern Sun Player of the Week for the fifth time this season. He also took home the D2 National Player of the Week, awarded by the U.S. Basketball Writer’s Association. In the process, Brandon became Duluth’s all-time leading scorer, nearing 2,000 total points. To go along with his weekly awards, Brandon was named the Northern Sun Player of the Year earlier this week.

Myer isn’t the only Division 2 player to have dominated early and often in his college career. Ashwaubenon grad Kyle Monroe has been a force all year for Michigan Tech. Last week he was again named the GLIAC Player of the Week after a great week. In a 73-63 win over Davenport, Kyle had 29 points and 10 rebounds. Kyle followed that up by dropping 41 points and adding 11 rebounds in a 78-70 win over Grand Valley State.

Speaking of double-doubles, a week after scoring his 1,000th point, Chris Knight put together an efficient outing despite Dartmouth’s 65-62 loss to Princeton. Knight, a Madison Memorial grad, had a game high 27 points and 13 rebounds. He did all this in just 28 minutes of play.

In sticking to the script of double-doubles, Arkansas-Pine Bluff hasn’t had much go their way this year, sitting at 4-24 on the season. However, Destiny High School alum Terrance Banyard put together a great performance in a 60-52 loss to Alcorn. Terrance had 16 points and 14 rebounds, adding a pair of blocks defensively.

Unlike Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Wright State has had a very successful year, led by Regis grad Bill Wampler. In an 81-74 overtime win over Cleveland State, Bill had 23 points, four assists, and three rebounds. Wright State will face off with Northern Kentucky tonight to determine the Horizon League regular season champion.

Speaking of conference champions, Wisconsin Lutheran College did something they haven’t done in their school’s existence. They secured a share of their first ever NACC regular season title. In the 86-81 championship-clinching win over Edgewood many former alumni contributed to the winning effort. Muskego’s Matty Farner scored 18 points and hauled in 16 rebounds while Brookfield Central’s Andrew Bruggink had a game high 26 points. Markesan’s Drew Bernhagen added 14 points and Green Lake’s Alex VanCrete had nine points and 10 rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh finished the regular season second in the WIAC and have advanced to the finals in the conference championship this week. Last week in an 86-65 win over UW-Whitewater, Jack Flynn had 16 points and eight rebounds. Flynn, an Appleton West grad, followed that up with 19 points and four rebounds in a 74-64 win over UW-River Falls. Flynn is tenth in UW-Oshkosh in scoring with 1,470 career points and sixth in rebounds with 760 total. Adam was named the WIAC Player of the Week this week for his performances.

Lastly, Marlon Ruffin was absolutely electric as Omaha took home a 93-86 win over Western Illinois. The Sun Prairie grad scored a career high 30 points in just 31 minutes of play. He was 11 of 15 from the field and added seven rebounds.
