Disappointed fans were turned away at the door due to the huge gathering that had already filled the bleachers at Madison La Follette during the Lancers' JV1 contest with Madison East on Feburary 21.

And for those that did gain entry, the Big Eight Conference showdown between the league's top two teams did anything but disappoint.

In a game that included several lead changes, went into overtime and featured some stellar individual play, Madison East ended Madison La Follette's unbeaten string at 19 with a heart-stopping 90-85 triumph.

Madison La Follette could have clinched the league title outright with a triumph, but instead the Lancers accomplished that feat a few later days later with a win over Middleton.

Madison East seniors Anthony Washington (6-3) and Keonte Jones (6-3), both three-year varsity performers and veterans of the intense east-side rivalry, led the way for coach Matt Miota and the Purgolders, who finished the season with a 20-4 record and were set to play Madison La Follette for a third time in a WIAA Division 1 sectional final before COVID-19 ended the season.

Washington, who did not play in Madison East's 71-61 loss to Madison La Follette on January 16 due to a code violation, poured in a game-high 23 points.

Jones, a super athletic wing prospect with excellent leaping ability and the ability to lock-down opponents with his defense, added 20 points, including 16 in the second half and overtime.

Though he played on a tweaked knee sustained in the Purgolders' previous outing, a victory over Sun Prairie, Jones also had two dunks in the final 35 seconds of the contest. His second dunk, in traffic over defenders, came with less than five seconds left and tied the game at 77 heading into overtime.

Madison East also got some solid bench play as junior Michael McIntosh (6-0) scored 13 points and senior Jalonzo Jackson (5-11) added nine in reserve roles.

For coach Curtrel Robinson and the Lancers, senior Isaiah Stewart (6-0) led the way with 20 points, followed by seniors Derek Gray (6-1) with 19 and senior Ben Probst (6-1) with 17.

Madison La Follette ended its season with a 23-1 record and, like Madison East, was very much looking forward to a third meeting at Sun Prairie in the sectional final before the WIAA canceled the season due to COVID-19.
