By Mark Miller

(Editor's Note: WisSports.net basketball writer Mark Miller is using the extra time available due to COVID-19 to research the high school basketball history of some of Wisconsin's larger cities. His All-Time Best series will run on WisSports.net during the next few months).

Putting the ball in the basket from the perimeter is the common theme for the All-Time Janesville squad released today on WisSports.net.

Rob Logertman, Bob Luchsinger, Tim Paterick, Ross Kingsley, Jim Jackson and Ben Berlowski, among many others, were know for their marksmanship from distance.

Even though second-teamer Pat Schloemer played prior to the three-point shot, he still remains Janesville's all-time leader in points scored in varsity contests.

Many of the top players from Janesville went on to play at the collegiate level, with Logterman and Lewis-Byers probably achieving the most at their respective colleges.

Following is a breakdown on the All-Time Janesville squad:

Criteria For All-Time Janesville Teams
1) In order to be chosen to the first or second all-time team, a player must have earned first, second, third or fourth team all-state honors from either the Associated Press or United Press International. Exceptions will be made, but will be rare.

2) In addition to the accomplishments a player achieved in high school, their college honors in the sport also weigh heavily when selecting the teams.

First Team All-State 1971 UPI

In just its fourth year of existence, Janesville Parker shocked the high school basketball world in March of 1971 by winning the WIAA state championship. After finishing in third place in the Big Eight Conference standings, coach Bob Morgan's Vikings rode the strong play of Luchsinger and Dick Meier (6-1) all the way to the title. After battling foul trouble and scoring just five points in a two-point victory over Neenah in the state semifinals, Luchsinger came alive in a big-time way against Milwaukee King in the title game, scoring 25 points to help the Vikings to a 78-69 victory. Luchsinger earned first-team all-Big Eight Conference honors as a senior and second-team laurels as a junior. Luchsinger went on to play college basketball for coach John Powless at the Unviersity of Wisconsin, earning three letters and scoring 193 career points with the Badgers. Luchsinger later served as head basketball coach at Monticello, Marshfield and Janesville Parker.

Paterick averaged 25.3 ppg as a senior and was named Player of the Year in the Big Eight Conference after scoring 304 points in just 12 league games. He finished his brilliant three-year career playing for Janesville Craig coach Stan DuFrane with 1,257 points. Paterick, a 6-foot-3 guard with hard-to-stop moves to the basket, picked the University of Wisconsin over scholarship offers from Kentucky, Marquette and Michigan. In 66 career games with the Badgers, Paterick scored 341 points.

Ross Kingsley, 6-2, G, 1980, Janesville Craig
First Team All-State 1980 AP

Few who saw it have forgotten it. Even though Kingsley and the Cougars of Janesville Craig came up short in a 65-63 loss to Milwaukee North in the 1980 WIAA Class A state-championship game, Kingsley's fourth-period performance is legend among state-tournament regulars. The 6-foot-2 guard scored 20 points in the fourth period and 32 overall in the loss to Milwaukee North. He finished the season with 659 points while leading coach Stan DuFrane's club to a 20-5 record as he averaged 26.4 ppg. The Big Eight Conference Player of the Year set a then-league record for most points in a season with 409 in 14 conference outings (29.2 ppg). Kingsley scored 1,153 points overall in his high school career and started 18 games for Northern Illinois as a freshman before transferring and playing the 1982-83 season at UW-Eau Claire. He was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 1983, ending his basketball career.

First Team All-State 1992 AP

In four WIAA playoff games in 1992, Berlowski scored 29 or more points in each game, including 40 in a sectional-final triumph over Racine Horlick. Against top-ranked Milwaukee King in the quarterfinals of the state tournament, the relentless wing guard scored 29 points and had nine rebounds for coach Bob Suter and the Cougars, who dropped an entertaining and hard-fought 54-48 decision to end an 18-6 season. Berlowski scored 667 points in 24 games in 1991-92 for a 27.8 ppg average. He earned first-team all-Big Eight Conference laurels and ranked as one of the most improved players in Wisconsin. Berlowski gave NCAA Division II Minnesota-Duluth a verbal commitment during the winter, but was offered a scholarship by Green Bay coach Dick Bennett in the spring and opted to play for the Phoenix instead. Berlowski played on three NCAA Tournament teams at Green Bay and ranks fourth on the school's list of all-time made three-point baskets with 218.
