Week 5 WisSports.net Team of the Week Nominees

Fox Valley Lutheran Foxes

Fox Valley Lutheran has played an extremely daunting schedule so far this year, and had losses to Little Chute, Xavier, and Wrightstown (all teams ranked at one point in Division 4) heading into a Week 5 contest against Division 4, third-ranked Freedom. Trailing 23-7 in the third quarter, the Foxes wouldn't give up, and got things going behind junior quarterback Drew Mears. He hit Brendan Schultz for a 79-yard touchdown to make it 23-15 Freedom heading into the fourth quarter. Mears added another touchdown on a one-yard plunge in the final period, and connected with Parker Knoll from nine yards out for what turned out to be the game-winning score in a 27-23 come-from-behind win for Fox Valley Lutheran. Mears finished with 185 passing yards and three scores in addition to a rushing touchdown.

Kaukauna Galloping Ghosts

Kaukauna and D.C. Everest picked up a game last week, but the showdown of unbeaten teams ended up a one-sided affair, as Kaukauna shutout the Evergreens 32-0. The defensive performance was especially impressive, as Everest had been averaging nearly 34 points per game coming in. Kaukauna quarterback Gannon Demler threw for 160 yards and a couple scores in the game, as Kaukauna moves to 4-0.

Lakeside Lutheran Warriors

It was the Game of the Week on WSN, and boy did it live up to the hype. In a crosstown rivalry of schools separated by less than a mile, Lakeside Lutheran topped Lake Mills 24-21 in double overtime. Lakeside led 21-7 at halftime, but saw the L-Cats come roaring back. Lake Mills tied the game at 21 with less than a minute remaining when Adam Moen hit Jaxson Retrum for a 19-yard touchdown. Neither team got on the board in the first overtime, but in the second, Lakeside Lutheran's Jameson Schmidt booted a 25-yard field goal to open things. Lake Mills lined up for a potential game-tying field goal attempt, but it was blocked by John O'Donnell and Joseph Balistreri to preserve the Lakeside Lutheran win. Nathan Chesterman (117 yards) and Micah Cody (108) both went over 100 yards for the Warriors.

Lourdes Academy Knights

Lourdes Academy took control of the Trailways Conference on Saturday, winning an extremely close and fun-to-watch 17-14 decision over fellow unbeaten Randolph in a matchup of ranked Division 7 squads. Lourdes got on the board first when Josh Bauer found Jack McKellips late in the first quarter, but Randolph would tie things early in the second. Bauer ran for a score a few minutes later, but Randolph was once again able to knot things up. Will Pollack booted a 24-yard field goal to give Lourdes a 17-14 halftime lead. The teams traded opportunities in the fourth, but Lourdes got a few key stops to hang on for the win. Bauer finished with 246 passing yards and 87 rushing yards, with one score through the air and one on the ground. Charlie Weber had 21 tackles for the Knights, who move to 5-0.

West De Pere Phantoms

It had been a while since the West De Pere Phantoms got on the football field. After a disappointing loss to Hortonville to open the season, West De Pere sat out the next three weeks due to COVID-related precautions. They finally got back at it in Week 5, with a game at unbeaten, Division 4 second-ranked Xavier. The West De Pere defense came up huge, limiting Xavier's potent offense to just 225 yards in a 25-14 victory. Over on offense, two-time conference Offensive Player of the Year Josh Blount threw for 133 yards and two touchdowns, adding 62 yards on the ground. David Vanderlogt ran for 157 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries.
