Catholic Central celebrates a thrilling Division 4 state title win over McDonell Central

WIAA Girls Volleyball State Championships were held around the state on Friday, as due to the ongoing pandemic, each division tournament was located at a different location.

The Division 1 tournament took place at Wisconsin Rapids High School, where top-seeded Sussex Hamilton breezed to a straight-set win over fourth-seeded Sauk Prairie to open things up. In the other semi-final, Burlington upended River Falls in straight sets to advance to the championship match. In the title contest, Hamilton captured its first-ever state title with a 3-1 victory over Burlington.

In Division 2, Luxemburg-Casco was a repeat state champion, knocking off Saint Croix Falls in the semi-finals. The top-seeded Spartans would face off against Lakeside Lutheran for the championship, as the Warriors were a straight-set victor over Platteville in the semi-finals. The evening's state championship would go to Luxemburg-Casco, who defeated Lakeside Lutheran in straight sets. The Division 2 state tournament was held at Kaukauna High School.

Howards Grove claimed a second consecutive Division 3 championship and third in the past five seasons. The Tigers knocked off Osseo-Fairchild 3-0 in the semi-finals, while Waterloo defeated Fall Creek on the other side of the bracket. While Waterloo scored a narrow victory in the first set of the championship match, Howards Grove rebounded to win the next three and the state title. Wausau West served as the host of the Division 3 tournament.

Division 4 top-seed McDonell Central opened things at Little Chute High School with a straight set win over fourth-seeded Prentice. Catholic Central was a straight-set winner against Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran in the other semi-final. While all three sets of the championship match were close, decided by four points or fewer, it was second-seeded Catholic Central who came away with the win against McDonell Central, as the Toppers win a seventh WIAA championship.
