VNN Athlete of the Week: November 9-15

Below are the VNN Athlete of the Week Nominees for the week of November 9 through 15. Voting is open until Thursday at 4pm, so be sure to vote for who you feel is most deserving and spread the word. Users may vote once per day.

VNN Athlete of the Week Nominees: Nov. 9-15

Joe Schmidt, Brookfield Academy football: Joe and Brookfield Academy found themselves in a shootout with Cedar Grove-Belgium and needed all of the record-breaking performance of Joe. He hauled in 13 catches for 190 yards and tied the state record with six touchdown catches as Brookfield Academy won 53-48. Joe added seven tackles defensively.

Malia Francis, Rhinelander girls swimming and diving: Malia had a big weekend at the WIAA State Swimming and Diving Championships. She came away with two individual events and was a part of two relay team wins as well as Rhinelander took home the Division 1 team title for the first time in school history. Malia won the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 55.96 and the 100 yard backstroke in 55.13, both for consecutive seasons. She also was a part of the 200 yard freestyle relay and the 400 yard freestyle relay winning teams.

Ella Houwers, Whitewater girls swimming and diving: Ella won a pair of individual events this past weekend for the Whitewater swim and dive team. For the third straight year she took home gold in the 100 yard breaststroke, winning the event in 1:05.27. After finishing second in the 200 yard medley last year, Ella won the event this year with a time of 2:06.90.

Abby Wanezek, Brookfield East girls swimming and diving: Abby and the rest of the Brookfield East blew away the competition en route to a Division 1 State title. She won two individual races and was a part of two different winning relays which both set state meet records. Her 50 yard freestyle win came in a record time of 22.63 as well. Abby added a win in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 49.48 which ended up being the second fastest time in state meet history. She was a part of both the 200 yard medley relay and 400 yard freestyle relay winning teams that both set state meet records.

Campbell Stoll, Arrowhead girls swimming and diving: Campbell won a pair of individual titles as Arrowhead came short of a title, finishing second behind the aforementioned Brookfield East squad. In the 200 yard individual medley, Campbell won with a time of 2:00.60 after coming in second place last year. She also took home gold in the 100 yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 53.99 which ranks fifth in state meet history.
