Black Hawk extends winning streak to 62 games; other notable performances and milestones

Black Hawk extended its winning streak to 62 games on Saturday afternoon. 

The Warriors, ranked No. 1 in the WSN Division 5 Coaches Poll, defeated D5 No. 10 Shullsburg, 66-49. 

The victory ties Black Hawk with Durand (1985-87) for the sixth-longest winning streak in girls' basketball state history

Black Hawk trailed Shullsburg 13-5 early in the contest before going on a 13-0 run to take control of the game. 

The Warriors finished the half outscoring Shullsburg 17-8 and led 35-21 at the break. 

Black Hawk started the second have with an 11-3 run to take a 46-24 lead and they would cruise the rest of the way, leading by as many as 29 points before earning the 17-point victory. 

Senior point guard Bailey Butler (5-8) finished with a game-high 26 points, including 19 in the first half, for the Warriors. The UW-Green Bay signee shot 10-for-20 from the floor and added seven assists, four rebounds and four steals in the win. 

Fellow senior guards Kaylee Marty (5-5) and Macie Stauffacher (5-7) also finished in double figures for coach Mike Flanagan and the Warriors, finishing with 13 and 12 points, respectively. 

Shullsburg was led by senior guard Anna Wiegel (5-7), who finished with a career-high 22 points for coach Nathan Russell and the Miners. She tallied 17 of those in the first half, including scoring 14 of the team's first 15 points. Wiegel shot 7-for-12 from the floor and 5-for-8 from behind the arc. 

Black Hawk moves to 8-0 on the season. The Warriors travel to Argyle (5-6) and D5 No. 5 Albany (10-1) this week for Six Rivers East contest. 

Butler is averaging a state-best 30 points per game to go along with 8.9 rebounds, 8.8 rebounds and 6.6 steals per contest. She is three points away from tying former UW-Green Bay standout Jen Wellnitz (1,580) for third on the program's all-time scoring list. Bailey's older sister Hannah Butler is second (1,582) and Natalie Leuzinger holds the school record with 1,803 points.

Shullsburg drops to 11-4 overall. All four of its losses have came against ranked opponents, including D4 schools Lancaster and Mineral Point. The Miners (5-0 in the Six Rivers West) travel to D3 No. 2 Prairie du Chien on Tuesday and host Wauzeka-Steuben (9-0) on Friday. 


Unity's Raegan Sorensen

Another big game for Sorensen; Johnson ties school record; Neilon records triple double

Unity senior Raegan Sorensen netted 40 points in Saturday's 70-58 win over previously unbeaten Phillips. The 5-foot-7 guard is averaging 26.8 points (4th most in the state), to go along with 8.5 points, 1.9 assists and 6.2 steals per game for coach Joe Tilton and the 8-0 Eagles, ranked No. 7 in the latest Division 4 WSN Coaches Poll. 

South Milwaukee junior Mia Johnson tied the program record with 35 points in a 72-22 win over Cudahy on Thursday. Katie Kitzke set the mark on December 5, 2008. Johnson is averaging 17.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.6 steals per game for coach Jim Grassl and the 11-3 Rockets. 

Greenfield sophomore Amayiah Neilon recorded a triple double with 11 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in Friday's 88-54 win over Shorewood. The 5-foot-5 guard is averaging 15.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 3.0 steals per contest for coach Jack Hervert and the 8-4 Hustlin' Hawks. 

Additions to 1,000-Point Club

Hayden Benson, La Farge -- Benson, a 5-foot-6 point guard, joined the 1,000-point club in Friday's 67-60 loss to unbeaten Wauzeka-Steuben. She tallied a team-high 24 points and added seven rebounds and three assists for coach and father Phil Benson. For the season, Benson is averaging 15.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.1 steals per contest for the 8-3 Wildcats. 

Madelyn LeGault, Stockbridge -- LeGault, a 5-foot-8 guard, scored her 1,000th career point in Saturday's 72-16 win over White Lake. She finished with 23 points in the victory and is averaging 19.6 points, 4.0 rebounds and 5.1 steals per game for coach Nate Menzel and the 9-1 Indians. LeGault joins her mom Melissa (Bunnell) Eldred, who was the first player in program history to reach the milestone (1999).
