VNN Athlete of the Week: February 8-14

Below are the VNN Athlete of the Week Nominees for the week of February 8 through 14. Voting is open until Thursday at 4pm, so be sure to vote for who you feel is most deserving and spread the word. Users may vote once per day.

VNN Athlete of the Week Nominees: Feb. 8-14

Matty Bianchi, Two Rivers wrestling: Bianchi headed into the state tournament last weekend looking to do something only 18 before him have, win his fourth state title. After winning the 138 pound title last year, he competed in the 145 pound weight class in Division 2. The lauded senior won the crown with a 20-1 tech fall, earning that rare fourth state title in his prep career.

Tanner Gerber, Cameron wrestling: Gerber went into this state weekend looking to win his third state title in as many years at Cameron High School. As a sophomore he won at the 106 weight class and followed it up with a win in the 113 pound class as a junior. This season he took home his third title at 126 with a 7-1 decision in the finals to secure it.

Chevalier Emery Jr., Neenah boys basketball: The Neenah boys have put together quite an impressive year, finishing the regular season 22-2. Last week they picked up three victories, two over ranked opponents, as Emery Jr. was exceptional. First in a 76-73 win over Notre Dame, he had 23 points, six rebounds and six assists. Emery Jr. followed that up with 17 points and five rebounds in a 75-64 win over Oshkosh North. The junior guard finished the week with 10 points in a 47-41 win over Whitefish Bay.

Brynn Olson, Rice Lake girls basketball: Rice Lake, the top seed in their regional pod, got two wins en route to a regional championship last week behind the stellar play of Olson. In the 58-40 semi-final win over Ashland, she had 25 points, nine rebounds and three steals. The talented junior followed that up with 25 points, eight rebounds and four blocks in a 54-44 win over Osceola in the regional final game.

Teagan Mallegni, McFarland girls basketball: Mallegni, just a freshman, helped lead the McFarland girls basketball team to a regional championship last weekend. First in a 72-67 semi-final win over Sauk Prairie, Mallegni had 28 points and seven rebounds. The 5'11" versatile wing then had 21 points and 13 rebounds in a 51-43 win over Edgewood en route to the regional championship.
