VNN Athlete of the Week Nominees: Feb. 15-21

Zach Daun, Stockbridge boys basketball: Stockbridge did something this past weekend that hadn't been done in school history, advanced to sectional play in boys basketball. Daun was a huge reason why. In a high scoring thriller of a semi-final game, Daun scored 22 points and hauled in seven rebounds in a 105-91 win over Young Coggs Prep. The senior forward followed that up with 19 points and 11 rebounds in a 50-48 win over Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah. The most important bucket came as time expired and Daun hit a layup to give the school its first regional title.

Vivian Guerrero, Lake Mills girls basketball: Guerrero was spectacular in the two sectional games for Lake Mills, propelling them to state. First in a semi-final matchup at Prairie du Chien, Guerrero filled the stat sheet up. She had 25 points, 12 rebounds, two steals and two blocks in the 57-56 win. Her most important basket came with two seconds on the clock as she made the game winning layup. The 6'1" senior followed that up with 17 points and 10 rebounds in a 65-59 win over Marshall in the sectional finals.

Sidney Polzin, Chippewa Falls/Menomonie/McDonell Central girls hockey: The Sabers girls hockey team captured a state title this past weekend as Polzin recorded three points in the two matches. First in a 4-3 overtime win over the Central Wisconsin Storm, she netted a lone goal. Polzin followed that up with a goal and an assist in a 3-2 win over the University School co-op to ensure a state championship.

Alex Ripplinger, Hudson boys hockey: Ripplinger was incredible in the net for the Hudson hockey team at the state tournament last weekend. In a 6-2 win over Notre Dame, Ripplinger had 10 saves on 12 shots on net. He followed that up with a 4-0, seven save shutout over Verona in the Division 1 state title. It was Hudson's fifth title in school history in boys hockey.

Brady Welsch, Saint Mary's Springs boys hockey: Welsch was excellent all season the Springs hockey team and continued to dominate at the state championship. First in a 5-1 win over Somerset in the state semis, the senior had two goals. He followed it up with two goals and two assists in a 4-1 win over Superior in the Division 2 title match. Welsh's dominant performance led Springs to their second consecutive state tile.
