Notre Dame's Sammy Opichka selected as state's top senior defensive player

Notre Dame's Sammy Opichka has been selected as the top senior defensive player as part of WSN Basketball Awards

Opichka is a versatile wing/guard that plays at a high level on both ends of the floor. Her length, athleticism, and quickness creates havoc for opposing offenses. 

She is averaging 18 points, 6.7 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 2.9 steals and 1.4 blocks per game for coach Sara Rohde and the Tritons, entering the state tournament. 

Opichka leads the Tritons' dominant defense that allows just 35.4 points per game. 

She was named the FRCC Player of the Year and the league’s top defensive player as a senior. 

Opichka, a NCAA Division I University of St. Thomas signee, has compiled over 1,200 points in her career to go along with her strong defensive play. 

Notre Dame defeated Onalaska, 64-32, in a Division 2 state semifinal the La Crosse Center. The Tritons will face the winner of Reedsburg and New Berlin Eisenhower tonight's D2 state title game at 6:35 p.m. 

Finalists for the award were Opichka, Mackenzie Holzwart of Howards Grove, Bailey Lutes of Cuba City, Laura Nickel of Marshall, Kylie Schmidt of Mishicot, Rylee Stauner of Barron, and Callie Ziebell of Sparta. 

Past winners of the award include Maddison Baker of West Bend West (2020), Kiarra Otto of Laconia, Emma Wittmershaus of Bangor (2018), Myriama Smith-Traore of Whitewater (2017), Morgan Glatczak of Mukwonago (2016), Taylor Higginbotham of Germantown (2015), Jen Wellnitz of Black Hawk (2014), Emily Gustafson of South Shore (2013), and Alexis Lindstrom of Howards Grove (2012).
