VNN Athlete of the Week Nominees: Mar. 1-7

Brian Parzych, Wauwatosa East boys basketball: Parzych was the floor general and emotional leader this past Saturday as Tosa East won the Division 1 WIAA State Championship. In a tight 56-48 semi-final win over River Falls, the crafty lefty had 19 points, five rebounds and six assists, including making play after play down the stretch. In the championship matchup with Kimberly, the Northern Michigan commit had only eight points, but dished out nine assists and added two steals to lead the Raiders to hoisting the gold ball after a 62-44 win.

Ashton Janowski, Pewaukee boys basketball: Janowski was a key piece of the puzzle as Pewaukee went for its first state title in just its second appearance in program history. In the 65-51 semi-final win over Lake Mills, he was one of four Pirates who scored in double figures, finishing with 10 points and adding four assists. In the championship, he came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, finishing with a game high 19 points and adding four rebounds as the Pirates won their first gold ball in school history.

Jameer Barker, Racine St. Catherine's boys basketball: Barker was exceptional Friday over the two tournament games, recording a pair of double doubles to help the Angels to a state title. In the 53-44 semi-final win over Wrightstown, Barker was the catalyst time and again, scoring 22 points and hauling in 16 rebounds. The 6'2" senior guard/forward combo then had 14 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in the 68-49 win over Lake Country Lutheran in the title game.

Preston Ruedinger, Lourdes Academy boys basketball: Lourdes was making their fifth state appearance in the last 16 years but still looking for their first gold ball. Ruedinger was determined to make that happen, despite struggling from the field at times. In the 65-41 semi-final win over Edgar, he tallied 18 points, five rebounds and four assists. The sharp-shooting senior then struggled early on in the title match against The Prairie School, as Lourdes fell behind 23-4 early and 27-12 at half. The supremely talented senior then started knocking down shots, finishing with 13 points, five rebounds, and five assists. No other play was bigger than Ruedinger's assist to teammate Nathan Slagter as the forward laid in a floater as time expired. The buzzer beater led to a 43-41 win and the first state title in program history.

Dylan Kuehl, Hustisford boys basketball: Kuehl was a human highlight reel this past weekend as he led Hustisford to their first state tournament and eventually their first state title. In the 65-53 semi-final win over Wauzeka-Steuben, he had 19 points and 10 rebounds. The Falcons then squared off with McDonell Central in the Division 5 Championship game. The 6'6'" athletic wing finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks in the 69-35 blowout. Between his blocks above the rim, and four dunks (360 included), Kuehl had the La Crosse Center buzzing, leading his team to a gold ball; their first in school history.
