VNN Athlete of the Week: April 5-11

Below are the VNN Athlete of the Week Nominees for the week of April 5 through 11. Voting is open until Thursday at 4pm, so be sure to vote for who you feel is most deserving and spread the word. Users may vote once per day.

VNN Athlete of the Week Nominees: Apr. 5-11

Valarie Cerveny, Gresham girls volleyball: The Gresham girls volleyball team captured a regional title in this abbreviated alternate fall season by winning two matches on Saturday. Cerveny was a huge reason why. In the a semi-final 3-0 win over Elcho she had six kills, five digs, two aces and an assist. The junior then turned it up a notch in the 3-1 win over Tigerton in the finals. Cerveny had 19 kills, nine digs, three aces, two blocks and an assist.

Madison Couey, Riverdale girls volleyball: Couey was the biggest assist to the regional title that Riverdale won this past Saturday, setting her teammates up time and again from her setter position. In the semi-final 3-0 win over Seneca, she had 32 assists, eight digs, and six kills. She continued her dominant play in the regional finals, tallying 29 assists, nine digs, six kills and three aces as the Riverdale swept Fennimore.

Beau Knopp, Cuba City football: Kopp did a little bit of everything, accounting for three of the four touchdowns in a 27-20 victory over Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg. The junior quarterback completed 11 of 18 passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns. He added 55 yards on the ground and another score. Handling punting duties, Kopp averaged 40 yards per punt on three attempts.

Phillip McCloskey, DeForest boys soccer: McCloskey didn't let a single goal through in 140 minutes of play over two different matches for the DeForest boys soccer team last week. First in a 4-0 shutout of Beaver Dam, he turned away everything for 80 minutes, allowing no goals and recording seven saves. In the following 10-1 blowout of Monroe, the junior goalkeeper had two saves and gave up zero goals while he manned the net for 60 minutes.

Brigitta Neverman, Green Bay Co-op girls swimming: Neverman took home a pair of individual state titles at the alternate spring state tournament this past Tuesday. In the 200 yard medley, Neverman finished less than half a second ahead of the second place finisher with a time of 2:01.86. She had finished third as a freshman in 2019. The junior then won the 100 yard butterfly event in 54.87, over a full second ahead of second place.
