VNN Athlete of the Week: April 26 - May 2

Below are the VNN Athlete of the Week Nominees for the week of April 26 through May 2. Voting is open until Thursday at 4pm, so be sure to vote for who you feel is most deserving and spread the word. Users may vote once per day.

VNN Athlete of the Week Nominees: Apr. 26 - May 2

Gavin Childs, Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld boys soccer: Childs was all over the pitch this past week as the Heights/Barneveld soccer team picked up a pair of Capitol conference wins. First in a 4-0 win over Lodi, the senior forward recorded a hat trick of his own. In the following 4-1 win over Columbus, Childs accounted for all four goals. He netted two of his own while assisting on the other two.

Madisen Noll, Oak Creek softball: Noll started out this spring season at a blistering pace over six games last week. The Knights went 5-1 on the week and Noll was almost untouchable at the plate. She went 14 of 21 (.667 batting average) while driving in 13 runs. She hit three home runs, five doubles and a triple and added 12 runs scored to top off an incredible start to the year.

Walker Retz, Boyceville baseball: Boyceville started off the season 3-0 and Retz was almost perfect from the plate, going nine for ten in those three wins. The Bulldogs won by a combined score of 42-4 in those three wins, including two shutout wins. Retz drove in 14 runs on his nine hits, recording four doubles, a triple and two home runs. The University of St. Thomas commit picked up the win on the mound in the 9-0 victory over Baldwin-Woodville. He pitched six scoreless innings, allowing only three hits and striking out 14 batters.

Kathryn Schmierer, Racine Lutheran softball: Schmierer picked up three wins in the first week of the season for the Racine Lutheran softball team, and didn't give up a single run to boot. The senior pitched 14 innings of shutout baseball, striking out 34 batters and only allowing four hits. Adding to her absolute domination on the mound, Schmierer went six for eleven from the plate and drove in six runs.

Owen Washburn, Webster baseball: Washburn was phenomenal in all facets as Webster picked up two wins to start the season last week. In an 18-0 opening season win over Unity, the senior could not be stopped at the plate. He went four for four with two home runs and drove in a whopping eight runs. He added a stolen base for safe measure. In the following 3-0 win over Clayton/Turtle Lake, Washburn went one for 2 from the plate, batting in a run while adding a walk and a stolen base. The spectacular senior also started the game on the mound, pitching a seven inning shutout, striking out 16 and allowing only three hits.
