VNN Athlete of the Week Nominees: May 3-9

Lauren Pansegrau, Middleton girls cross country: Pansegrau had a great weekend, winning the alternate season cross country state meet, and setting a state meet history record in the process. After finishing as runner-up as a sophomore, the junior ran the 5,000 meter course with a time of 17:07.3, a minute and 20 seconds ahead of second place finisher Genevieve Nashold of Madison West. That time broke the state meet record as Pansegrau led the Cardinals to a state meet team title.

Olivia Baumgartner, Almond-Bancroft softball: Olivia was spectacular this past week, recording wins in all five of the Eagles games. Over those five games, she pitched 24 innings and allowed only two earned runs and only twelve hits. The junior pitcher struck out an incredible 48 batters through the five games. Adding to her greatness on the mound, Baumgartner had five hits and eight RBIs at the plate.

Jake Bourget, Stevens Point boys cross country: After finishing fourteenth at the state meet in 2020, Bourget looked to improve upon that outcome, and he did just that. The senior runner took home the individual crown in the alternate season cross country state meet, finishing the race with a time of 15:38.6. He finished five seconds ahead of Griffin Ward of Middleton as he Bourget helped lead the Panthers to an overall state team title.

Taylor Gordon, Waterford girls soccer: Gordon got her first taste of varsity soccer action last week and the sophomore shined. In an 8-1 win over Delavan-Darien, Gordon netted five goals. She followed that up with three goals and an assist in a 7-0 win over Badger. The Wolverines then traveled to partake in the Big Foot Tournament, where Gordon netted three goals and added an assists over the three matches.

Zach Nichols, McFarland boys soccer: The McFarland boys soccer was looking to get back to the state tournament after finishing as runner ups in 2018 and 2019. Nichols did everything in his power to make that happen this past week. First in the 5-0 regional final win over Stoughton, the junior forward netted a goal and assisted on one. He followed that up with two goals and an assist in a 4-0 win over Sugar River in the sectional semis. Nichols ended the weekend with both goals in the 2-0 win over DeForest, propelling McFarland to the alternate season state tournament.
