The rumor all winter long that Sussex Hamilton senior forward Patrick Baldwin Jr. -- one of the premier players in the country and perhaps the most complete player to ever come out of Wisconsin's prep ranks -- would eventually commit to play for his father Patrick Baldwin Sr. at UW-Milwaukee finally came to fruition on Wednesday.

Baldwin Jr. announced his commitment to play for the Panthers of the Horizon League over other finalists Duke and Georgetown at a press conference in the Sussex Hamilton gym.

Ranked as one of the top five prospects in the country by all national recruiting services, Baldwin Jr. is a 6-foot-9 forward who can handle the ball, pass, shoot, rebound, defend, make difficult shots and basically put a team on his back while leading them to a victory.

He joins a Milwaukee program that has won 47 games while losing 70 during Baldwin Sr.'s four years as head coach. The Panthers went 10-12 in 2020-21 and finished in eighth place in the Horizon League.

Baldwin Jr. will bolster a line-up that is expected to return leading scorer DeAndre Gholston (16.8 ppg) along with other key performers such as Josh Thomas (12.5 ppg) and Tafari Simms (7.9 ppg).

In addition to Baldwin Jr., newcomers who could make an impact in 2021-22 for the Panthers include UTEP transfer Jordan Lathon, San Francisico transfer Samba Kane, Boston College transfer Vin Baker Jr. and incoming freshmen Jasin Sinani of Oak Creek.

Baldwin Jr. missed all but two games during the 2020-21 high school season after sustaining a high-ankle sprain in the Chargers' second game of the season, a 71-63 victory over Menomonee Falls on Dec. 4, 2020.

Baldwin Jr. had scored 43 points in Sussex Hamilton's season opener, a 90-84 loss to eventual WIAA Division 1 state champion Wauwatosa East.

During his three-plus years of prep competition for coach Andy Cerroni at Sussex Hamilton, Baldwin Jr. scored 1,595 points and averaged 19.9 points per game. He also averaged 6.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists over his four-year career.
