VNN Athlete of the Week Nominees: June 7-13

Jaylynn Benson, Sugar River girls soccer: The Sugar River girls soccer team took home a regional championship this past weekend in dominating fashion. Benson spearheaded that dominance, first by scoring a hat trick and adding an assist in a 9-0 win over Jefferson. The senior forward then added another four goals in a 7-1 win over Edgerton in the regional finals.

Maya Brenna, Barron/Cumberland girls soccer: The Barron-Cumberland co-op team took home a pair of regional wins this past week and Brenna led the way. First in a 10-0 blowout of Amery, she accounted for half the goals, scoring three of her own and assisting on two more. The senior then had another two goals as they topped Somerset 4-2 in the regional finals.

Ty Kretz, Marinette boys golf: Kretz was the lone golfer to shoot under par at the Wautoma Sectional held at Wausahara Country Club last week. The senior shot a 69, two under par to take home medalist honors. As a team, Marinette won the Division 2 sectional behind top finisher Kretz.

Morgan Smetana, Baldwin-Woodville softball: Baldwin-Woodville finished the regular season a perfect 17-0 on the year and Smetana has been dominant all year. Nothing changed this past week as she collected two wins over New Richmond and Prescott. First in a 6-1 win over New Richmond, the junior pitcher allowed 0 earned runs, two hits and struck out 13 in a complete game. Smetana followed that up with a complete game shutout in a 2-0 win over Prescott. She struck out 11 and allowed only two hits.

Ashton Swanson, Seneca baseball: Swanson has been great for the Indians all season on the mound and at the plate. Last week he pitched a complete game shutout in a 10-0 win over Kickapoo/La Farge, striking out 13 batters and only allowing two hits. In the following 13-4 win over North Crawford, Swanson wasn't on the mound but excelled at the plate. He went three for four with a home run, three RBIs and two stolen bases. On the season, Swanson has struck out 70 strikeouts in 43 and 2/3 innings.
