The Boyceville baseball team made its third trip to the state tournament this year and came away with its first state championship in program history.

After falling to eventual champion Stratford in the Division 3 state semifinals in 2019, the Bulldogs came into this season with high aspirations as they brought back a plethora of talent.

The Bulldogs faced off with Rosholt in the Division 4 State Title game and their ace Walker Retz was in shutdown mode on the mound. The senior came two batters away from pitching a perfect game. A hit by pitch in the third and a double in the fourth inning was all the Rosholt hitters could muster against the University of St. Thomas commit. Retz struck out 13 batters in the complete game 4-0 shutout win.

Offensively for the Bulldogs, Retz had one of the five hits, a two-run RBI single in the bottom of the third that scored Trett Joles and Ira Bialzik. Trevor Holllister added a run with an RBI sac fly in the fifth while Bialzik had an RBI single in the sixth, ending the Bulldogs scoring.

For Rosholt, pitcher Blade Niewiadomski took the loss, despite allowing only five hits through five and two-thirds innings. Niewiadomski struggled with command, hitting four batters and tossing two wild pitches. Four errors in the field doomed the Hornets as well. Blade Niewiadosmki collected the lone hit for the Rosholt.

For Boyceville, they finished 21-1 on the season and won the program's first ever state title. Rosholt went 21-4 and took part in its fifth state tournament, still searching for its first state title.

State SemiFinals

Boyceville ten-run ruled Southwestern in five innings in the state semifinals.

The Bulldogs busted out twelve hits that led to eleven runs in the 11-1 victory. Walker Retz went 4-4 with six RBIS to lead the Bulldog offense while Connor Sempf added two hits and two RBIs. Braeden Roemhild and Trevor Hollister batted in the other two runs for Boyceville.

Sempf pitched a five-inning complete game for Boyceville, striking out six batters and allowing just five hits and one earned run.

Southwestern pitchers Jordan Stanton and Peerson Kephart allowed nine earned runs on those twelve hits, unable to contain the overpowering Boyceville offense. Offensively, Stanton had the lone RBI while Colson Splinter had two hits for the Wildcats.

Rosholt's Isaac Cychosz was dominant on the mound in the 6-1 semifinal win over Greenwood, allowing just one earned run on two hits, while striking out 13 batters for the Hornets.

Offensively, Blade Niewiadomski had an RBI single in the second while Cychosz, Sam Trezbiatowsk and Nathan Lemanczyk each had an RBI. Brock Lyshik went three for three at the plate and scored two of the runs for the Hornets.

For Greenwood, Sullivan Whitford allowed five earned runs on eight hits through four innings of work and took the loss for the Indians. Cooper Bredlau and Dakota Clark had the two hits for Greenwood, with Bredlau batting in the lone run.
