Sun Prairie came up one run short of a D1 State Championship in 2019 and came into this season with high aspirations. The Cardinals were ranked #1 in the Baseball Wisconsin Yearbook Preseason Rankings and ended the season on top of Division 1 as well.

Bay Port had the same title hopes. Ranked just two spots below Sun Prairie in the preseason rankings, Bay Port was a favorite to get to this game as well.

With five runs in the fifth and six in the sixth, the two-inning offensive explosion proved more than enough for the Cardinals in the 11-2 win, giving the Pirates just their second loss of the season.

Davis Hamilton, Josh Caron and Carter Wambach all had two RBIs for the Cardinals while Durlin Radlund batted in three runs.

The Cardinals recorded eight of their nine hits in the two innings and forced six walks from the Bay Port pitching staff.

Jackson Hunley pitched four innings of shutout baseball to record the win for Sun Prairie. Hunley struck out four batters and allowed just three hits.

For Bay Port, it was their eleventh state appearance since 2000 as the Pirates came up short of a third state title.

James Bornick led the way offensively for Bay Port as he had two hits and batted in the only two runs.

On the mound, Gavin Rusch pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowing four earned runs off five hits. Rusch was the losing pitcher on record.

For Sun Prairie, it turned out to be a state record ninth state title. Like Bay Port, the Cardinals have been to the state tournament eleven times since 2000. In that time frame, Sun Prairie has now won six state championships and come runner-up twice.

State SemiFinals

Menomonee Falls ran into a buzzsaw that was the Sun Prairie offense in the first inning of the state semi-final matchup. The Cardinals sent 15 batters to the plate in the first, scoring 10 runs on just five hits. Sun Prairie was aided by five errors by the Phoenix defense.

Seven different Cardinals had an RBI in the first inning. Davis Hamilton and Carson Shepard scored twice from the top of the lineup.

Despite the 10-1 deficit after the opening frame, Menomonee Falls made it a game as they scored six runs over the next six innings but came up short 10-7.

Zach Alburg and Keli Grennier had two RBIs a piece for Falls, including a fifth inning solo home run from Alburg.

On the mound, Davis Hamilton was the pitcher of record for Sun Prairie, picking up the win after pitching two and two-thirds innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits.

For the Phoenix, Cole Fialco's first inning struggles landed him the loss despite the fact that the nine runs surrendered while he was on the mound were all unearned.

Falls was making its first state tournament appearance in the baseball program's history while Sun Prairie has been a staple of the state tournament over the past 20 years.

The Eau Claire Memorial baseball team made its first appearance at the state tournament since 2008. Unfortunately for the Old Abes, Bay Port welcomed them in the semis.

The Pirates scored eight runs through the first six innings before Memorial scored their lone run in the last frame to result in an 8-1 Bay Port win.

Four of the eight Pirate runs were batted in by second baseman Carl Cano. In four at-bats, the University of St. Thomas commit hit two singles and added a double. Matt Perry walked twice for Bay Port and scored three runs.

On the mound, Theo Zeidler pitched five scoreless innings for Pirates to record the win. He allowed just four hits and struck out seven.

For Memorial, top pitching prospect and Arkansas commit, Vincent Trapani took the loss after pitching four innings and giving up five earned runs on five hits.

The Old Abes offense mustered just five hits as Peyton Platter got the lone RBI as he reached on an error in the seventh inning.
