WIAA Girls' Basketball Playoff Changes for 2021-22

The WIAA has released girls' basketball divisional placement and sectional assignments for the 2021-22 season. 

Division 1 - 68 
Division 2 - 87 
Division 3 - 87 
Division 4 - 96 
Division 5 - 128

Total: 466 Teams 

The 2022 WIAA State Tournament is set for March 10-11-12 in Green Bay. 

Division 1

New D1 Teams:

Hortonville - (Enrollment, 1216; Previous D2)
Kaukauna - (Enrollment, 1208; Previous D2)

Notes: Hortonville joins Sectional #1 which also includes Appleton East, Hudson (last year's sectional champion), Kimberly, and Neenah, amongst others. Sectional #2 features defending state champion Germantown; other notable teams in the sectional include De Pere, DSHA, and Kaukauna. Sectional #3 is arguably the strongest in Division 1, featuring Verona (a state qualifier last season), Arrowhead, Brookfield Central, Brookfield East, Sun Prairie, amongst others. The top teams in Sectional #4 are Kettle Moraine and Oak Creek. 

Division 2

New D2 Teams:

Golda Meir - (Enrollment, 617; Previous D3)
Hayward - (Enrollment, 600; Previous D3)
Marinette - (Enrollment, 610; Previous D3)
Oshkosh North - (Enrollment, 1158; Previous D1)
Racine Park - (Enrollment, 1186; Previous D1)
Wauwatosa East - (Enrollment, 1153, Previous D1)

Notes: Sectional #1 appears to be wide open heading into the season with Hortonville now in Division 1. Notre Dame, the defending D2 state champion, is the clear favorite in Sectional #2. Reedsburg, last year's D2 state runner-up, and Waukesha West are the top two teams in Sectional #3. Rounding out the D2 assignments is Sectional #4, which features the always strong Woodland West Conference, including New Berlin Eisenhower (D2 state qualifier last season), New Berlin West, Pewaukee, and Pius XI Catholic. 

Division 3

New D3 Teams:

Jefferson - (Enrollment, 597; Previous D2)
Menominee Indian - (Enrollment, 336; Previous D4)
Milwaukee School of Languages - (Enrollment, 598; Previous D2)
Southern Door - (Enrollment, 335; Previous D4)
Waupaca - (Enrollment, 591; Previous D2)
Whitewater - (Enrollment, 566; Previous D2)

Notes: Sectional #1 has a number of teams that will be vying for a trip to the state tournament, but no clear favorite at this point. Freedom, Wrightstown, and Brillion are the top teams in Sectional #2. Waupun is the favorite in Sectional #3, which also includes Edgerton, Platteville, and Prairie du Chien. Sectional #4 will have a number of teams in the mix for a state appearance, including Milwaukee School of Languages and Catholic Memorial, amongst others. 

Division 4

New D4 Teams:

Brodhead - (Enrollment, 314; Previous D3)
Laconia - (Enrollment, 318; Previous D3)
Riverdale - (Enrollment, 190; Previous D5)
Valders - (Enrollment, 299; Previous D3)

Notes: Phillips is the early favorite in Sectional #1, which also includes Fall Creek (D4 state qualifier last season) and Neillsville. Westfield (a D3 state qualifier last season), Bonduel, and St. Mary Catholic are among the top group of teams expected to compete for the Sectional #2 title. Aquinas (D3 state runner-up last season) and Mineral Point (D4 state runner-up last season) are the top teams in Sectional #3. Milwaukee Academy of Science, Valders, and Winnebago Lutheran are among the top teams in Sectional #4 heading into the season. 

Division 5

New D5 Teams:

Brookwood - (Enrollment, 181; Previous D4)
Spencer - (Enrollment 181; Previous D4)
Wisconsin School for the Deaf - (Enrollment, 47; Previous non-WIAA)

Notes: McDonell Central, a D5 state qualifier last season, is the favorite in Sectional #1. Assumption, the defending D5 state champion, along with Edgar and Wabeno/Laono are the top teams in Sectional #2 heading into the season. Blair-Taylor is the favorite in Sectional #3 which also includes Bangor, Highland, Hillsboro, and Wauzeka-Steuben. Randolph, a D4 sectional finalist last season, is the clear favorite in Sectional #4 while Albany is on the other half of the sectional and is also bringing back a strong squad.
