( Week of January 3-9)

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Derek Gray, Freshman (Madison, Wis./La Follette), Guard of UW-Whitewater 

Gray averaged 27.5 points on 47.8 percent shooting and added 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game last week to help the Warhawks win a pair of WIAC road games and improve to 4-0 in conference play. At No. 4-ranked UW-Oshkosh on Jan. 5, he posted a career-high 36 points to go with seven rebounds and four steals to help UW-Whitewater to an 82-78 overtime victory. He scored 10 points in the extra period alone, including a jumper that put UW-Whitewater ahead for good with 2:03 to play and a 3-pointer on the next possession that gave the team a four-point advantage. Three days later, Gray registered 19 points, three rebounds and two steals and hit the go-ahead jumper with 33 seconds left to help the Warhawks to a 77-72 triumph at UW-Eau Claire. The performance helped UW-Whitewater record its best start in league play since the 2014-15 season.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 

Aleah Grundahl, Junior (DeForest, Wis./DeForest), Forward of UW-Whitewater 

Grundahl averaged 21.0 points on 54.8 percent shooting and added 6.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game last week to help the No. 8-ranked Warhawks to a 2-0 record against nationally ranked WIAC opponents. Against No. 10-ranked UW-Eau Claire on Jan. 8, she tallied a career-high 28 points on 12-of-19 shooting and added five rebounds, two assists and three steals to help UW-Whitewater to a 73-64 victory. Grundahl scored 17 of her points in the second half to help the Warhawks hold off the Blugolds. Three days earlier, she buried the game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds of regulation to force overtime and finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and one steal in UW-Whitewater’s 67-63 win against No. 18-ranked UW-Oshkosh.
