From the WIAC --

University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s Levi Borchert was tabbed the Player of the Year to lead the individuals chosen to the 2022 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Basketball Team by the league coaches. In addition, UW-River Falls’ Rodrick Payne was selected the Newcomer of the Year and UW-Oshkosh’s Matt Lewis the Coach of the Year.

Borchert secured first team accolades for the second straight season after being named Newcomer of the Year in 2020. He leads the conference with 10.7 rebounds and 34.1 minutes per game, while ranking second with 18.6 points per contest and a .621 field goal percentage (187 of 301). Borchert has produced 14 double-doubles and scored in double figures in 24 of 25 games, including a career-high 32 points against UW-River Falls on Jan. 22, 2022. He matched a career high with 18 rebounds against St. Norbert College (Wis.) on Dec. 21, 2021.

Repeat selections on the first team from a season ago included: UW-La Crosse’s Ethan Anderson and Wyatt Cook (Player of the Year); UW-Oshkosh’s Eddie Muench and Hunter Plamann; and UW-Platteville’s Quentin Shields. Anderson and Shields also secured first team recognition in 2020.

Payne ranks fifth in the conference with 7.0 rebounds per game, 10th with a .509 field goal percentage and 12th with 14.1 points per contest. He reached double figures in scoring in 17 games, including a season-best 27 points at UW-Oshkosh on Jan. 22, 2022. Payne produced five double-doubles. A Newcomer of the Year is defined as a student-athlete who used his first season of participation in men’s basketball this season. Transfers are not eligible unless they didn’t participate in men’s basketball at their previous institution.

UW-La Crosse’s Sean Suchomel, UW-Oshkosh’s Eric Peterson and UW-Platteville’s Justin Stovall claimed a spot on the five-member all-defensive team for the second straight year. Stovall also received the distinction in 2020.

Lewis has directed the Titans to the WIAC regular-season and tournament titles, as well as a 22-3 record and a bid into the NCAA Division III Championship. This is the fourth time in the last five seasons that UW-Oshkosh has eclipsed the 20-win mark.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.
