D5 Semi-Final Notes: Undefeated Randolph will meet defending D5 state champion in the title game

Randolph continues its unbeaten season, defeating Highland, 47-25, in a Divison 5 state semifinal. 

The Rockets are now 30-0 on the season and will try to complete a perfect season on Saturday. 

Randolph led 22-8 at halftime and pushed its lead to 19 points early in the second half. Highland then went on a run to get within nine with 29-20 with 9:25 to play. 

The Rockets ended the game on an 18-5 run. 

Randolph shot 19-for-45 from the floor, 3-for-13 from three, and made six of 12 three throws. The Rockets scored 28 points in the pain and 18 points off of turnovers. 

Junior Maddie DeVries, a 5-9 forward, scored a team-best 13 points and added six rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and two assists for coach Chad Kaufman and the Rockets. 

Senior Abby Katsma, a 5-6 guard, tallied 10 points and six steals for Randolph. Junior Jorey Buwalda, a 6-0 forward, the team's leading scorer, battled foul trouble which limited her to 22 minutes. She finished with six points, nine rebounds, and two steals. 

Highland shot 11-for-48 from the floor, missed all 12 three-point attempts, and went three of six from the free throw line. 

The Cardinals, which finished the year 21-4 overall, were led in scoring by seniors Katelyn Esser (5-11) and Meg Tarrell (5-8) who each finished with eight points for coach Josh Tarrell. 

Randolph will play Assumption, the defending D5 state champion, in the state championship game on Saturday at 11:05 a.m. 

Assumption is headed to the Divison 5 state championship game for the second consecutive season. 

The Royals, the defending state champion, led 24-17 at halftime. They build a 12-point lead with 10:31 to play (33-21) before McDonell Central went on an 11-0 run to get within one with 3:01 left. 

The Macks took a 35-34 lead with 1:12 left but it was short-lived with Assumption taking the lead back with 55 seconds left off a basket by Maleia Kolo (6-0) which proved to be the game-winner. 

Assumption shot 15-for-39 from the floor, 5-for-13 on three-pointers, and made one of four free throws. The Royals turned the ball over 15 times. 

Freshman Anna Schooley, a 5-11 forward, led the team with 10 points and seven rebounds for coach Ryan Klein and the Royals.

Other top contributors for the Royals were freshman Sarah Shaw, a 5-6 guard, and senior Kayla Kerkman, a 5-8 guard, who tallied eight and seven points, respectively.  

McDonell Central (20-4) was led by junior Marley Hughes, a 5-9 guard, who finished with 10 points. Senior Lauryn Deetz, a 5-5 guard, added eight points but was limited in the second half after injuring her right knee at the end of the first half. 

Assumption will play undefeated Randolph in the Division 5 state championship game on Saturday at 11:05 a.m.
