Waupun cruises past Freedom to claim the Division 3 state title

Waupun is taking home its first gold ball in program history. 

The Warriors never trailed in the contest en route to beating Freedom, 63-42, to claim the Division 3 state championship in their second state tournament appearance. 

Waupun jumped out to a 14-2 lead and pushed its lead to 24-9 with 7:51 left in the first half. Freedom settled down and got within nine and trailed 33-22 at halftime.  

The Warriors led by as many as 24 points in the second half en route to the victory. 

Senior guard Abbie Aalsma, a 5-9 Illinois State signee, scored a game-best 22 points for Waupun. She shot 9-for-17 from the floor, 3-for-8 from three, and made her lone free throw attempt. Aalsma added five assists and three steals. 

Sophomore wing/forward Kayl Peterson, a 6-0 Division 1 prospect, tallied 15 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and three blocks for coach Tim Aalsma and the Warriors, which finish the year with a 27-3 record. 

This is their second state tournament appearance, the last was in 1996. 

Freedom was led in scoring by senior forward Megan Alexander, a 6-0 South Dakota Mines signee, who tallied 11 points and added five rebounds for coach Mike Vander Loop and the Irish. 

Junior point guard Sadie Jarmolowicz (5-10) contributed nine points, three assists, and four steals for the Irish which finished their year with a 28-2 record. This is their second state runner-up finish and third overall appearance at state.
