Hortonville's Lyric Johnson selected as the state's top senior defensive player

Hortonville's Lyric Johnson has been selected as the top senior defensive player as part of the WSN Basketball Awards

Johnson is a strong defensive player who had the task of guarding the opponents' top offensive player. She used her athleticism, strength, and quickness to cause problems for her opponents while also getting steals and deflections. 

She was named Division 1 WBCA all-state as a senior and earned honorable mention WBCA all-state recognition in Division 2 as a junior. 

Johnson helped lead Hortonville to a Divison 1 sectional appearance and a 24-2 overall record. 

The 5-9 guard was named to the Fox Valley Association Defensive Team in each of the past three seasons, including being voted unanimously twice. 

Johnson tallied 12.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 3.5 steals per game for coach Celeste Ratka and the Polar Bears.

She helped Hortonville to two state tournament appearances and finished her career with 957 points, 489 rebounds, 229 assists, and 267 steals. 

Finalists for the award were Johnson, Bridee Burks of Lancaster, Lexi Frieboth of Mosinee, Brooke Lechleitner of Lake Holcombe, and Jordana Reisma of Brown Deer. 

Past winners of the award include Sammy Opichka of Notre Dame (2021), Maddison Baker of West Bend West (2020), Kiarra Otto of Laconia, Emma Wittmershaus of Bangor (2018), Myriama Smith-Traore of Whitewater (2017), Morgan Glatczak of Mukwonago (2016), Taylor Higginbotham of Germantown (2015), Jen Wellnitz of Black Hawk (2014), Emily Gustafson of South Shore (2013), and Alexis Lindstrom of Howards Grove (2012).
