Catholic Memorial at Franklin

Defending state champion versus defending state champion. What better way to start the 2022 high school football season. Both Catholic Memorial and Franklin went unbeaten en route to state titles last year, and both could make legitimate claims as the best team in the state regardless of division. Defending Division 1 champ Franklin starts the year second in our preseason D1 rankings, though the Sabers have to replace a strong 2022 class that included state player of the year Myles Burkett. Catholic Memorial features a talented roster as the D4 favorites, with elite class of 2024 prospects Donovan Harbour and Corey Smith.

Sussex Hamilton at Mukwonago

Sussex Hamilton won the Greater Metro Conference championship last year and is ranked seventh in our Division 1 preseason rankings on WisSports.net. The Chargers bring back talented multi-year starting quarterback Nate Kollath as they go for a repeat. They'll start with our top-ranked team in the D1 preseason rankings, the Mukwonago Indians. After sharing the Classic Eight title with Muskego last year, the Indians advanced to the state semi-finals and have hopes of advancing even further this season.

Waunakee at DeForest

These longtime rivals clashed for many years in the Badger-North and more recently the Badger-Large, but now they meet in what is technically a non-conference game, as DeForest has moved to the Badger-Small. Waunakee is coming off a Division 2 state title, but needs to replace much of the offensive production from last year. DeForest returns an elite quarterback Mason Keyes plus 1000-yard rusher Cale Drinka.

Kettle Moraine at Fond du Lac

Kettle Moraine finished a distant fourth in the Classic Eight last year but put together an outstanding postseason run, getting to the state semi-finals before falling to Homestead. A talented group of athletes comes back as the Lasers try to build on that playoff push and perhaps challenge in the loaded Classic Eight Conference. A road game at a very good Fond du Lac team, who was among the youngest in the state last year and brings back 17 starters. It will be the first game for new head coach Sam Plucker.

Cedar Grove-Belgium at Mayville

Both Mayville and Cedar Grove-Belgium finished in a three-way tie in their respective conferences, and both are expected to be among the top teams in their respective divisions this year. Mayville is coming off a co-Flyway Conference championship and Division 5 state runner-up, as 2000-yard rusher Blake Schraufnagel is one of the top players in the state. Cedar Grove-Belgium is the preseason pick in the Big East Conference, as versatile offensive weapon Gabe Egan returns.
