The annual WSN Basketball Showcase took place on Sunday at Kettle Moraine High School with more than 60 girls competing and 13 college coaches in attendance.
Here are observations on players who stood out to me while watching the games:
Aliana Brown, 5-5, Sr., G, Kenosha Tremper
Brown was a first-team all-Southeast performer as a junior, averaging 20.5 points per game to go along with 6.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 3.8 steals per game for head coach Lynell Collins and the Trojans. Brown's ability to score in several ways and defend were all on display at the showcase.
Lainee Burks, 5-7, Sr., PG, Lancaster
Burks recently committed to play for NCAA Division III UW-Whitewater which finished the 2021-22 season as the national runner-up. The 5-7 point guard will take over as the Flying Arrows' go-to player this season after the graduation of her older sister Bridee who is now playing at NCAA Division I Idaho State University. Lainee attacked the hoop well at the showcase, whether it be to score or dish, and caused problems for her opponents on the defensive end of the floor. As a junior, she tallied 7.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 2.5 steals per contest for the Flying Arrows.
Jessilyn Ernst, 6-2, Sr., F, Pardeeville
Ernst's length and athleticism were on display on Sunday at the WSN Basketball Showcase. She displayed good post moves and blocked or altered a number of shots on the defensive side of the ball. Ernst averaged 16.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per contest for coach Joe Guenther and the Bulldogs as a junior, earning first-team all-Trailways West and honorable mention WBCA all-state.
Emily Loging, 6-1, Sr., W/F, Rio
Loging is an under-the-radar player who can play from the wing and put the ball on the floor along with scoring in the paint. As a junior, she averaged 14.8 points, 10.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.7 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game for head coach Deb Hutzler and the Vikings on her way to earning first-team all-Trailways West and honorable mention WBCA all-state.
Megan Murphy, 5-7, Sr., G, Verona
Murphy is known for her sharpshooting and that was certainly on display at the WSN Showcase. She possesses a high basketball IQ and showed her ability to score off the dribble and in traffic. Murphy was named first-team all-Big Eight and honorable mention WBCA all-state as a junior playing for her mom and head coach Angie Murphy. Megan tallied 13.1 points per game as a junior while shooting over 40 percent from 3-point land.
Katelyn Odem, 5-8, Jr., G, Homestead
Odem has been a key performer during her first two seasons at Homestead and was rewarded with an NCAA Division II offer from Truman State this spring. She is a steady player on both ends of the floor who is willing to do whatever her team needs. As a sophomore, she averaged 7.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.4 steals per contest for coach Corey Wolf and the Highlanders. Odem is poised to take another step forward this season at Homestead after a strong summer.
Maddie Andersen, 5-11, W, Waukesha West
Noelle Anthon, 6-2, Jr., F, Oconomowoc
Gaby Aune, 5-7, G, New Richmond
Emma Close, 5-7, Frosh., G, Wauwatosa East
