Looking Back

The big top ten matchup between Gilman and Owen-Withee saw sixth-ranked Owen-Withee score a 30-14 victory over the third-ranked Pirates, as the Blackhawks out-gained Gilman 430-238. Owen-Withee's ground game continued to dominate, compiling 420 yards while averaging 7.1 yards per attempt. Logan Amacher was everywhere; he ran for 216 yards and three touchdowns, completed a 10-yard pass, led the team with nine tackles and two interceptions on defense, returned punts and kicks, and 39 yards per punt.

Siren downed Clayton 28-14 in a very competitive Lakeland-West Conference game. Siren quarterback Nick Webster threw for 59 yards and a score and led the team with 101 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. After starting 3-0, Clayton has now dropped two straight.

Three Lakes took control of the Northern Border Conference with a dominating 48-0 win over White Lake/Elcho on Friday. Jared Kaufman threw for 267 yards and four touchdowns with another 81 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Josh Cogar had 202 yards of total offense and scored three times.

Phillips continued its dominating rushing season, going for 478 yards and six touchdowns on 53 attempts as the Loggers defeated Oakfield 48-20.

Speaking of big-time rushing performances, Athens racked up 639 yards and seven touchdowns on 61 carries as the Bluejays won a shootout over Alma Center Lincoln 74-36.

Saint Mary Catholic ran just 40 offensive plays against Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah, but the Zephyrs scored 96 points. Six different players scored touchdowns for Saint Mary Catholic.

Newman Catholic was nearly flawless in a 60-0 defeat of Almond-Bancroft on Saturday, as Coner Krach threw for 204 yards and three touchdowns while a balanced rushing attack saw seven backs combine for 143 yards and four scores. The Cardinals also scored a pair of defensive touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Looking Ahead

Three Lakes and Florence are both 4-1 overall this season and 2-0 in the Northern Border Conference. After dispatching White Lake/Elcho last week, Three Lakes will be looking to keep the momentum going behind the dynamite backfield duo of quarterback Jared Kaufman and running back Josh Cogar.

Athens put up huge numbers offensively last week, but things will get tougher on Friday night as the Bluejays welcome in unbeaten Thorp, who has posted three straight shutouts.

The only ranked matchup this week finds undefeated Gibraltar traveling to unbeaten Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas that will have conference implications and playoff seeding ramifications.

Phillips and Northwood/Solon Springs are both off to solid starts in the Lakeland-East, and they'll match up in Northwood on Friday night.

Star of the Week: Kyler Ellenbecker, Athens

Athens went up 28-0 after one quarter on Friday, but Alma Center Lincoln's offense kept the pressure on before Athens pulled away for a 74-36 victory. Senior quarterback Kyler Ellenbecker ran for 462 yards and four touchdowns on 36 carries, averaging 12.8 yards per attempt. He also completed five-of-eight passes for 56 yards and three scores, amassing more than 500 yards of total offense.
