The much-anticipated rematch of last year's Division 3 state championship game was dominated by Waupun.

The Warriors, last year's state champion, jumped out to a 22-7 lead and routed top-ranked Freedom, 63-33, at Waupun High School on Tuesday.

Waupun, ranked No. 2 in D3, led the game 37-15 at halftime and connected on seven three-pointers in the first half. The Warriors finished with 10 triples in the win and proved they are the favorite to repeat as Division 3 state champions.

Kayl Petersen, a 6-1 junior wing/forward, finished with a game-high 22 points in the victory. The Marquette University recruit dominated the paint, tallying 15 rebounds and eight blocks, and added two assists and two steals.

Petersen shot 8-for-16 from the floor, 3-for-8 from behind the arc, and 3-for-4 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Lydia Aaslma, a 5-10 guard, tallied 17 points and nine rebounds for the Warriors.

Aalsma shot 7-for-15 from the floor and made three of seven from 3-point land with a coach from Bradley University in attendance.

Bradley University is one of six schools that have offered a scholarship to the talented sophomore.

The Warriors also got strong play from junior point guard Gracie Gopalan (5-4), who contributed four points and nine assists for coach Tim Aalsma and the Warriors.

Gopalan played tough defense on 5-10 point guard Sadie Jarmolowicz, a Division II Winona State recruit, who was held to just four points after entering the game scoring over 16 points per game.

Waupun improved to 7-1 on the season. The Warriors' lone loss was against D1 No. 4 Brookfield East, 62-57, in the opening week of the season.

Next up for Waupun are meeting against East Central contenders Kettle Moraine Lutheran (away, December 15) and Kewaskum (home, December 20).

Freedom was led by senior Kiersten Kriewaldt, a 6-0 wing/forward, who finished with 12 points for coach Mike Vander Loop and the Irish.

The Irish were without senior Sydney Bartels, a 5-11 forward, who has been out for the last three games due to a concussion but is expected to return soon. Another notable injury for the Irish is sophomore guard Haley Reed (5-8) who is out for the season with an ACL injury.

Freedom is now 6-1 on the season. The Irish have three games before Christmas break, including a home contest against D3 No. 4 Brillion on December 22.
