Updated Football State Record Book following 2022 season

Mayville's Blake Schraufnagel put his name all over the state's record book

The 2022 high school football season was another one for the record books, as a number of players and teams etched their names in history.

Kevin Patrowsky keeps the State Record Book for the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association and has provided an updated 61-page document that is chock full of great information. Also, he's again added on to the 8-Man Football Record Book, which continues to grow. For any updates, additions, or corrections to the Record Book, please contact Kevin Patrowsky.

Below are some of the noteworthy additions to the Record Book from 2022.

2022 Highlighted ADDITIONS TO 11-PLAYER STATE RECORD BOOK

Passing Updates

  • Sun Prairie East quarterback Jerry Kaminski threw for 40 touchdowns, tying him for 7th in state history.
  • Kohler/Sheboygan Lutheran/Christian quarterback Max Breitenbach threw for 468 yards in a game, which places him in the top 35 in state history.
  • New Richmond's Seamus Scanlan completed 150-of-195 passes, good for a 76.9% completion percentage, which is second in state history (min. 150 attempts).
  • Catholic Memorial's Isaiah Nathaniel completed 123-of-168 passes for a 73.2% rate, which is fourth.
  • Sussex Hamilton's Nate Kollath moved into 33rd on the state's career passing list with 6,172 yards.
  • Right behind Kollath is Jerry Kaminski from Sun Prairie East with 6,112 yards.
  • Kaminski is 12th with 77 career passing touchdowns. Kollath is 17th with 72 career passing touchdowns. Jackson Flottmeyer of Aquinas is tied for 18th with 71 career passing touchdowns.

Rushing Updates

  • Mukwonago running back Wynn Stang ran for 470 yards in a non-conference win over Sun Prairie East in Week 2, which is the second-most in state history for a single-game.
  • Columbus junior running back Colton Brunell ran for 2,897 yards this year, placing him fifth on the single-season list.
  • Mukwonago's Stang ran for 2,762 yards, which is 11th.
  • Elmwood/Plum City's Trevor Asher ran for 2,235 yards in the nine-game regular season, which is third in state history for the regular season only. Asher's seven consecutive games with at least 200 rushing yards ties a state record.
  • Asher and Stang each had three, 300-yard games, which is tie for third in state history.
  • Blake Schraufnagel of Mayville and Colton Brunell of Columbus had at least 100 rushing yards in all 14 games, tying a state record.
  • Brunell had six games of at least 200 rushing yards, tied for second most in a single-season.
  • Schraufnagel set a new mark for the highest rushing average with at least 200 carries, averaging 10.8 yards per attempt.
  • Cameron Mendoza of Beaver Dam racked up 52 carries in a game this year, which is sixth-most in state history.
  • Mayville's Blake Schraufnagel finished his career with 5,734 rushing yards, good for 11th on the state's all-time list.
  • Elmwood-Plum City's Trevor Asher had 12 games of at least 200 rushing yards in his career, tying for the eighth most in state history.
  • Mayville's Blake Schraufnagel had 30 games of at least 100 yards, the fourth-most in state history for a career.

Receiving Updates

  • Kohler/Sheboygan Lutheran/Christian receiver Noah Heinen set a new state record with 24 receptions in a game. He also had 336 receiving yards in that game, which is second all-time.
  • Cedar Grove-Belgium receiver Gabe Egan hauled in 20 touchdown, which is tied for 10th.
  • Egan set a new mark with an average of 26.9 yards per receptions, the most for anyone with at least 40 receptions.
  • Onalaska's Nicky Odom had 88 catches (19th) for 1,235 yards (40th).
  • Odom had 166 receptions in his career, tied for 17th.

Scoring Updates

  • Columbus' Colton Brunell scored 264 points, 17th in state history.
  • Mayville's Blake Schraufnagel scored 588 points in his career, the ninth most in state history.

Kicking Updates

  • Appleton North's Caden Popp connected on four field goals in a single game, which is tied for third in state history.
  • Popp also made 15 field goals for the year, which is tied for second.
  • Columbus kicker Corbin Hynes made 79 extra points, which is fourth.
  • Mukwonago's Ryan McCormack scored 89 points (71 XP, 9 FG), which is tied for sixth in kicking points in a season.

Punting Updates

  • Appleton West's Rolland Tremain averaged 45.2 yards per punt, the fifth-most in state history.
  • Blair-Taylor's Bryan Rogstad averaged 44.0 yards per punt, the sixth most.

Defense Updates

  • Southern Door's Taylor Schaefer had 44 tackles for loss, the second-most in state history.
  • Howards Grove's Bryant Dortman had 41 tackles for loss, the fourth-most.
  • Schaefer finished with 62 career tackles for loss, the fourth-most in state history.

Team Updates

  • Amery trailed 52-20 against Somerset before coming back to win 62-58; the 32-point comeback is the largest on record.
  • Monroe set a new team rushing record with 5,524 yards on the year.
  • G-E-T ran for 671 yards in a 52-28 win over Black River Falls, the second-most for a team in state history.

2022 ADDITIONS TO 8-PLAYER STATE RECORD BOOK

With the current incarnation of 8-Player Football still being very young, there were one again a significant number of additions to the Record Book this season. We will highlight some of the more prominent additions below.

Passing Updates

  • Mellen's Tommy Zakovec threw for 444 yards in a game, the fifth-most in 8-player history.
  • Zakovec's seven touchdown passes in that game ties him for fourth.
  • Jesse DeBauch of Gillett threw for 1,881 yards, good for 14th on the state's single-season list.
  • Siren's Nick Webster set a new record for most combined passing and rushing yards in a career with 6,924.
  • Newman Catholic's Conner Krach is second in career combined passing and rushing yards with 5,887.
  • Webster had 2,840 combined pass and rush yards in 2022, the fourth-highest single-season total.
  • Webster finished with 4,774 career passing yards, the third-most in state history. 
  • Saint Mary Catholic's Danny Griffith had 4,366 career passing yards, the fourth-most. Griffith's 66 career passing touchdowns is tied for second.

Rushing Updates

  • Washburn's Brenden Watsin ran for 651 yards in a game this year, the most in state history.
  • Watsin's 10 rushing touchdowns is also a new record.
  • Konner Ellenbecker of Athens ran for 462 yards in a single game, the fifth-most in state history.
  • Belmont's Kolby Lancaster ran for 1,620 yards this year, the 15th most in state history. It is the third-most rushing yards by a quarterback.
  • Newman Catholic's Thomas Bates ran for 3,547 yards in his career, the second-most in state history.

Receiving Updates

  • Bowler/Gresham's Beau Brunner caught 66 passes this year, tying for fifth-most in state history.
  • Karsen Cox of Williams Bay racked up 1,144 receiving yards, the fourth-highest single-season total in state history.
  • McDonell Central's Dale Tetrault caught 178 passes in his career, a new state record.
  • Tetrault's 38 career receiving touchdowns is also a new record. His 2,806 receiving yards is second.
  • Adam Seeber of Wabeno/Laona finished with the fourth most receptions (110) and receiving yards (2,036) for a career.
  • Seeber and Atticus Johnson of Saint Mary Catholic tied for second in career receiving touchdowns with 30.

Scoring Updates

  • Washburn's Brenden Watsin set a new record with 80 points scored in a single game (10 TD, 10 two-point conversions)
  • Watsin's 10 rushing two-point conversions is also a record.
  • Watsin also threw a touchdown, with his 86 points responsible for a new record.
  • Newman Catholic's Thomas Bates finished with 452 career points scored, the third-most in state history.

Defense Updates

  • Wabeno/Laona's Hunter Cronauer tied a state record with 30 tackles in a single game
  • Cronauer and teammate Ryan Roy set a new single-season tackles record with 184.
  • Cronauer's 462 career tackles is the most ever, with Roy's 460 in second.
  • Cronauer set a new state record with 5.5 sacks in a single game and 53 sacks in his career. His 17.5 sacks in 2022 is third-most (he tied the record with 19 sacks in 2021).
  • Cronauer also holds the record for most tackles for loss in a career with 107 and his 38 tackles for loss in 2022 trails only the 46 he had in 2021.
  • Cronauer holds records for most fumble recoveries in a season (7) and career (13).

Team Updates

  • Washburn set a new state record with 114 points scored in a single game.
  • Mellen had 92 points in the same game, the third most in state history and the most for a losing team.
  • The 206 combined points in Washburn's 114-94 win over Mellen is a state record. The 1,567 combined yards is also a record.
  • Washburn rushed for 771 yards as a team in that game, the second-most in state history. The Castle Guards' 859 total yards of offense is also second-most.
