03/31/2023, 1:30pm CDT
By WSN

The Wisconsin Dairy Athlete of the Month sponsored by WisSports.net (WSN) in partnership with Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin (DFW) aims to connect consumers with Wisconsin’s dedicated dairy farmers and the youth who grow and raise food for their local communities.

DFW and WSN are recognizing high school student-athletes who are actively involved on a Wisconsin dairy farm and participate in at least one WIAA-sanctioned varsity sport. Dairy is a vital part of the economy in nearly every Wisconsin county, whether urban or rural. Family-owned farms, dairy processors and dairy-related businesses generate thousands of jobs and millions of dollars of economic activity while contributing to local income and tax revenues.

Sports:

Strassburg: I play basketball, normally I played center, but this year with teammate injuries, it forced me to play different positions, which I adapted to quickly.

Strassburg: For the past 2 years I have been in enrolled in the Youth Apprenticeship program through NTC. This allows me extra time on the farm to help with daily chores. How else are you involved in your local community?

Strassburg: I was involved in my church youth group for many years, participated in many church functions, set up and clean up for our towns community days. I also volunteer for the Red Cross blood drive, help at Brunch on the Farm, and am able to volunteer through FFA events.

ON THE FARM

What is your farm story and how long have you been involved in the operation?

Strassburg: Ever since I can remember, I was going to the barn to help with chores. We milk 85-90 cows on our farm, and its just our family doing the labor. I have always gotten up early before school to get some chores done, then back to the barn after school.

What is your role on the farm?

Strassburg: I milk cows, mix feed, feed calves, clean barns, spring planting, hay crops, fall harvesting, anything that needs to be done, I pitch in to get it done.

Who do you farm with?

Strassburg: My parents Kurt & Diana Strassburg, my bother Brock, and my grandparents Elton ad Marcella Strassburg.

What is your favorite part of being involved with the farm?

Strassburg: Time spent with my family. Although we don’t get to take big vacations, my mom & dad are there for all my extra curricular activities. The values and commitment I have learned growing up on a farm is always something I will appreciate.

Where does your farm ship its milk?

Strassburg: Mullins Cheese in Knowlton

What product is your milk turned into?

Strassburg: Cheese and whey protein powder

What sustainability practices do you employ on your farm?

Strassburg: Reduce tillage, rotate crops, and plant cover crops.

Please share your most proud moments or farm achievements/awards?

Strassburg: When I was 5, I asked for a red & white Holstein. My parents bought me Ruby. She had 5 daughters, and they had daughters. Then I added some Brown Swiss, and now my herd is around 25 head. I have earned many awards through FFA, and this June I will receive my State Degree.

Additional Comments

Strassburg: I have a special interest in antique farm machinery. I have purchased a Farmall C, H, M, 400, I was gifted a John Deere 730, 3020, an Allis Chalmers B with all the attachments. I love to see this old equipment come back to life, and would like to have several of the pieces restored.
