Important changes coming to WSN Extra subscription service

An important update from the WSN team:

WisSports.net has served high school sports fans in Wisconsin for more than 20 years as the go-to resource scores, stats, standings, statewide leaders, news, analysis, and much more. Over that time we've gone through many changes, from different parent companies to different platforms to new design looks.

It's time for another change at WSN, as beginning today we will migrate our very popular WSN Extra subscription content over to a new home.

You can find WSN Extra content going forward at www.extra.wissports.net.

We have utilized the SportsEngine platform for both written content and league management information (rosters, schedules, scores, etc) since we were acquired by the company in 2012. It has been an excellent system to manage all of our information, even after we joined initially the VNN family and now as part of PlayOn, GoFan, and VNN/rSchoolToday.

However, SportsEngine has updated its back-end tools and will no longer support recurring subscriptions and paywalls, meaning we can no longer run our WSN Extra service on the platform.

What does this mean for you, the users?

  • First and foremost we want to do everything we can to minimize the impact on our readers and fans, who have helped us become a unique entity in the entire country. There will be some changes going forward, for both existing subscribers and new subscribers.
  • For clarity purposes, we will be referring to the SportsEngine site as the "legacy" site, with the site and platform we are moving to as the "new" site.
  • All league type data (rosters, schedules, scores, box scores, etc) will remain on the legacy site.
  • For now, written content that does not require a WSN Extra subscription will also remain on the legacy site, though that could change.
  • There will be a small price increase, the first in five years, with new Annual subscriptions now $64.99 (from $59.99) and Monthly subscriptions now $11.99 (from $9.99). All subscriptions auto-renew unless canceled.
  • We will be updating both our legacy site and our new site to easily allow users to navigate back and forth between the two sites with ease, including article lists of WSN Extra content on the legacy site as well as links from the new site to view team data on the legacy site.
  • We will continue to post WSN Extra content on both our legacy site and our new site for the foreseeable future, so that existing subscribers can continue to utilize their current subscriptions to access and read information.
  • We will bring over some recently published WSN Extra articles from the legacy site to the new site, but it will be a process that will take some time, and we do not anticipate bringing over every single WSN Extra article covering more than a decade.
  • The new platform will be a work in progress, and we will continue to become more familiar with it and the expanded capabilities it can provide our staff to produce compelling content.

For Existing Subscribers

Because we are going from one platform to another, for security and privacy reasons, we are not able to directly migrate user data from our legacy WSN Extra subscription system to our new system. This means we cannot bring over usernames, passwords, payment information, renewal data, etc.

We know this is not an ideal situation, but it is what we will work to make the best of it within the requirements we have.

  • We will continue to post WSN Extra content on both our legacy site and our new site for the foreseeable future, so that existing subscribers can continue to utilize their current subscriptions to access and read information.
  • When current monthly subscriptions are set to renew, we will be ending those subscriptions and they will not be renewed on our legacy platform.
  • Annual subscriptions will continue to renew on our legacy site, WisSports.net, as they have in the past.
  • We will contact all users whose subscriptions have expired and not been auto-renewed regarding this process, and provide information on how to purchase a new subscription on our new platform.
  • Those users (former subscribers on WSN) will need to create a new account on extra.wissports.net, which is not tied to the legacy platform in any way.
  • For coaches interested in subscribing to WSN Extra, this means you will have separate logins to enter team info on our legacy site and to read premium content on our new site.
  • Similarly, posting on our message board will utilize your legacy WSN account, while new subscribers or those whose legacy subscriptions expire will require a separate login.
  • WSN Event Directory access will need to be given manually to those who purchase a new subscription (on extra.wissports.net). Email info@wissports.net to get access.

For New Subscribers

  • The process for new subscribers or people who did not have an active subscription as of May 1 will be much easier.
  • Signing up for all new WSN Extra subscriptions going forward will be done on our new site at www.extra.wissports.net.
  • All new WSN Extra content will be posted on that new site.
  • There will be a small price increase, the first in five years, with new Annual subscriptions now $64.99 (from $59.99) and Monthly subscriptions now $11.99 (from $9.99). All subscriptions auto-renew unless canceled.

Going Forward, and a Thank You

We understand this process will cause some disruptions for our existing subscribers and will result in questions from our users. We will continue to do everything we can to minimize the interruptions, allow a smooth transition, and continue to provide high-quality original content that you have come to know and trust from our dedicated staff at WisSports.net.

We do not take this process lightly and would not be doing so if we were not required as a result of the changes from SportsEngine.

We thank you for your continued patronage of WisSports.net.

Sincerely and respectfully,
