Athlete of the Week Nominees: May 22-28

Kian Bystol-Flores, Cambridge

Bystol-Flores shot the lowest round of golf in the regional round in the entire state this past week. The sophomore golfer shot a 66, taking top medalist honors at the Division 3 Williams Bay regional at Delbrook Golf Course in Delavan. His 66 was eight strokes better than the second place finisher. Bystol-Flores' top finish of the week helped Cambridge win the regional team title as well.

Emily Kinnunen, Drummond

Kinnunen did something this past week in the regionals that very well could never have happened before in state history. In a 15-0 regional-semifinal win over South Shore, the senior tossed a no-hitter on the mound and hit for the cycle from the plate. Kinnunen struck out ten batters in the four-inning contest while going four of four from the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored, hitting for the cycle. For an encore, she pitched in the 11-1 regional final win over Flambeau, giving up one run on three hits and five strikeouts in five innings. Kinnunen went two of three from the plate with a triple, double, three runs scored and a walk.

Liam Richards, Appleton West

Richards competed in three events this past week in both regionals and sectionals and took home first place finishes all six times. The senior trackster won the 110 meter and 300 meter hurdles along with the long jump at the Division 1, Appleton North regional early in the week. He then went on to win all three events at the West De Pere sectional, advancing to state in all three. Richards won the 110 meter hurdles in 14.22 seconds and the 300 meter hurdles in 38.90 seconds at the sectional meet. His distance of 21-08.25 was the longest in the long jump at sectionals as well.

Brooklyn Sandvig, Chippewa Falls

Sandvig is looking to repeat as state champ in the 100 and 200 meter dashes while three-peating in the 400 meter dash. The Iowa State commit won those three events and the long jump while competing at the Hudson regional early in the week. The senior then won the three races and took second at the D.C. Everest sectional, advancing to state in all four events for the third straight season. Sandvig won the 100 meter dash in 11.91 seconds, the 200 meter dash in 24.66 seconds and the 400 meter dash in 54.55 seconds at the sectional meet. Her distance of 18-07.25 took second in the long jump.

Hayley Settem, Somerset

Settem was exceptional as she willed the Somerset softball team to a regional championship. First in a 7-0 win over Spooner in the semifinals, Settem pitched a complete game no-hitter, striking out 18 batters. She added a home run, two RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base from the plate. Settem then pitched all nine innings in the 2-1 extra-inning win over Northwestern in the regional title game. She allowed one hit on six hits while striking out twelve batters. Settem also went three of four from the plate with an RBI and a stolen base.
