Athlete of the Week Nominees: May 29 - June 4

Lexi Berger, Rice Lake

Berger was the catalyst offensively for the Rice Lake girls soccer team as the squad won a pair of regional matches to advance to sectional play. The Warriors began the week with a 10-0 win over Hayward as Berger didn't net her own goal, but assisted on three. The senior midfielder then found the net herself in the 7-0 regional final win over Amery. Berger scored four goals in the shutout victory.

Nathan Cumberbatch, Shorewood

Cumberbatch finished off his prep track career with three gold medals this past weekend at UW-La Crosse. The senior runner took home gold in the 400 and 800 meter races for the third consecutive season. He won the 400 meter dash in 47.83 seconds and the 800 meter in 1:54.48, which was just a half a second faster than the second place finisher. Cumberbatch then anchored the 4x400 meter relay team that won in 3:21.11. The Shorewood boys track and field team accumulated 38 total points, with Cumberbatch accounting for 30 of them.

Lola Kolawole, Whitefish Bay

Kolawole qualified and competed in four events this past weekend at the WIAA State Track & Field Meet. She took home two golds and one silver, helping Whitefish Bay finish sixth overall in the Division 1 team standings. Kolawole won the 100 and 200 meter dashes ahead of defending champ Brooklyn Sandvig of Chippewa Falls. She finished the 100 meter race in 11.73 seconds and the 200 meter in 23.96 seconds. Kolawole came in second behind Sandvig in the 400 meter race with a time of 56.73 seconds. The senior trackster also competed in the long jump, but did not medal.

Peyton Mancl, Pacelli

Mancl was dominant on the mound in two regional games for the Pacelli softball team this past week. First in a 15-1 five-inning victory over Almond-Bancroft, the sophomore pitcher allowed one unearned run on three hits, while striking out six batters. She also went one of three with an RBI from the plate. Mancl was then more impressive in a 3-0 shutout of Newman Catholic in the sectional finals. She went the distance on the mound, striking out twelve batters and allowing just three hits in the complete game shutout.

Alex Willfahrt, Auburndale

Willfahrt was nearly impossible to get out at the plate in three regional wins for the eight seed Auburndale baseball team. In a 10-3 opening round win over Crandon, the senior outfielder went four of four from the plate with two RBIs and two runs. Willfahrt then went two of three with two RBIs, two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base in a 7-5 comeback win over Coleman. He scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning. Auburndale then used a five-run top of the seventh inning to win 8-5 over Wittenberg-Birnamwood in the regional championship game. Willfahrt went two of four with two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base.
