As illustrated in our NBA season preview, ten former Wisconsin high school basketball standouts are suiting up at the highest level. A handful of others are in the G-League. Below is a catch up on those that are playing at the highest level and excelling.
Tyler Herro of Whitnall
Haliburton continues to supplant himself as one of the top point guards in the entire NBA. His efficiency is off the charts, and he currently quarterbacks the top scoring offense in the league, the Indiana Pacers. Coming off his first All-Star season last year, the former Iowa State Cyclone has only skyrocketed his place in the NBA. Haliburton is averaging 27 points, shooting 52% from the field and 43% from three. He leads the entire NBA with 11.9 assists per game and has also added 3.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game. Haliburton is well on his way to a second consecutive All-Star appearance and should be in the conversation for the league MVP.
Hauser has found his footing in Year 3 in the NBA. The former Mr. Basketball in Wisconsin plays for the top seeded Boston Celtics and is entrenched in the rotation. After averaging 16.1 points per game last season, the former Marquette and Virginia standout is playing nearly 23 minutes per game and has improved his numbers across the board. Hauser is averaging 10 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. He's making nearly three, three-pointers a game while shooting over 45% from beyond the arc.
Herro is a former first round selection, NBA Sixth Man of the Year and 2020 All-Rookie selection. In year five the former Whitnall and Kentucky grad is once again playing extremely well at the highest level. Herro is averaging 22.9 points per game while shooting 45% from the field and 41% from three for the Miami Heat. He's also averaging five rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game for a Heat team that is 11-9 and in the seventh spot in the east.
Jalen Johnson of Nicolet
Johnson is in the midst of a break out campaign in his third season in the NBA. After playing just 15 minutes per game last year, Johnson has doubled that and added 12 starts for the Atlanta Hawks. That extended playing time is bearing fruit as he's averaging 14.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists and over a block and a steal per game. Hi shooting percentages are at an all-time high as well. Johnson is making 60% of shots from the field and over 42% from beyond the arc, adding a season high 75% free throw shooting percentage.
Looney has been considered by many around the league as one of the more underrated players in the NBA. He's in Year 9, all with the Golden State Warriors and has never put up eye popping numbers. Even this year, Looney is averaging just 5.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. What Looney has provided most isn't a statistic or found in the box score. With his energy and hustle, he constantly creates extra scoring opportunities for teammates. And not to mention, he played in all 82 games the past two seasons.
Podziemski sits in one of the more enviable positions in the NBA for a young scoring guard. He is on a team with the likes of Chris Paul, Steph Curry and Klay Thompson and can pick the brain of some of the best to ever do it. That being said, Podziemski's playing team has increased as the year has gone on, averaging over 18 minutes per game. In those minutes he is averaging 7.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists. In a 104-101 loss the Timberwolves, Podziemski put up a career high 23 points.
Alondes Williams of Milwaukee Riverside
Burton has bounced around the NBA and G-League over the past five seasons. The former Vincent and Iowa State Cyclone is currently playing for the Stockton Kings, the Sacramento Kings G-League affiliate. Burton is averaging 11.3 points and five rebounds per game. He's adding 2.1 assists and 1.2 steals per game through nine games.
Hauser is the younger brother of Sam, wing for the Boston Celtics and is creating his own path to the ranks of the NBA. After going undrafted, Hauser has suited up for the Ontario Clippers this season. Through ten gams he has averaged 9.8 points per game while shooting 50% from the floor and beyond the arc, making over two threes per game.
Williams has been a playmaker at every level of basketball he's played. It's no different now as he suits up with the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Last season he averaged 9.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists during his time in the G-League. This year, Williams has improved all of those numbers. He's averaging 19.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game. On top of that, he's shooting 49% from the field and 44% from three.
