Prairie du Chien was the only team to beat Aquinas last year, downing the Blugolds 16-12 in the opening game, as Aquinas rattled off 13 consecutive wins after that to claim a third straight Division 5 state title. Prairie du Chien's defense limited Aquinas to just 97 rushing yards on 28 attempts in that one, controlling the line of scrimmage. These figure to be two high-level teams again in 2024 and this is a great way to begin the schedule, with the game played at UW-La Crosse.
These state heavyweights have frequently played non-conference and postseason games over the years, and its great to see them continue things with a high-quality opening week contest. Marquette fell to Arrowhead 21-14 last year in Week 1 but rebounded to claim the Division 1 state championship.
Darlington goes back to its roots with an afternoon game to open the 2024 season, and it's always a special time when the Redbirds host a day game. Last year, Darlington took it to Platteville in a 34-7 victory, pulling away with three rushing touchdowns in the second half.
Franklin opened the 2023 season with a 31-24 win over Catholic Memorial in a game that was won through the air. Both teams featured D1 running backs that have since graduated, but it was junior quarterbacks who carried their teams, with M.J. Mitchell (CMH) and Joey Kallay (Franklin) returning this season as two of the top signal-callers in the entire state.
Notre Dame features the state's top rusher from a year ago, running back Christian Collins, as well as the state's top-ranked senior, James Flanigan. Ranked number one in our WSN Division 2 rankings, they'll have a bullseye on them all year. It won't be easy against a Kaukauna team that has made it to the state semi-finals two years in a row.
