This marks the third consecutive season that this matchup gets the nod as the Kwik Trip & Wisconsin Dairy Game of the Week to begin the year.
Franklin opened last year with a 31-24 win over Catholic Memorial in a game that was won through the air. Both teams featured D1 running backs that have since graduated, but it was junior quarterbacks who carried their teams, with M.J. Mitchell (CMH) and Joey Kallay (Franklin) returning this season as two of the top signal-callers in the entire state.
So, why such a tough matchup to open the year?
"We have always scheduled strong programs in non-conference," said Franklin coach Louis Brown. "It allows you to really see where your flaws are an dhow hard your kids want to compete."
For Catholic Memorial, it's also about testing themselves against a quality opponent.
"Being young on the offensive line, we are hoping to see growth and improvement out of that group," said assistant coach Matt Bergan. "We understand how good of a team Franklin is. We look forward to the opportunity to compete against a great program led by an outstanding coaching staff."
Despite it being the first game, these teams are ready to get after it.
"We had a good, physical training camp," said Bergan. "We had a good scrimmage last week and our off-season speed and strength program was a success. Now we must get better each week and never be content."
"I feel our preseason has been a lot of learning and kids that are excited for their opportunity," added Brown. "Everything is earned, and let's see how much we've earned."
