These teams met in last year's playoffs as defending champions, when Aquinas, who would go on to win a third straight Division 5 title, scored a 20-13 victory over Columbus, who it all in 2022 in Division 4 but dropped down to D5 last season. Columbus dominated larger Greenfield in Week 1, while Aquinas scored a narrow win over a very good Prairie du Chien squad.
This is one of the great small school rivalries in the state, as these teams battled over the Marawood Conference for many years, including the 2008 state championship game, before realignment separated them. They've continued this rivalry in non-league play, with Edgar winning 40-6 last year, the only loss for Stratford, as they'd go on to claim the Division 6 state title for a second straight year. Of course, Edgar would also win a championship in Division 7. The teams have combined for 17 WIAA state titles.
These teams used to be conference opponents, but renew their rivalry as a non-conference game for a second straight season. Last year, St. Joe's won 34-12 in Week 2, and both teams have high expectations coming into the season. St. Cat's had no trouble in a 69-0 win over Madison East last week, while St. Joe's put a running clock on Shoreland Lutheran as well.
One of the most unique and well-known rivalries is the M&M Game, with the two schools separated just 3.2 miles, the Menominee River, and the Wisconsin-Michigan border. This matchup was first contested in 1894, with Menominee (MI) holding a 59-51-7 advantage. Marinette last claimed victory in 2018, dropping five straight to their neighbors from the U.P. Marinette running back Chase MacGregor had 263 yards and four touchdowns on just nine carries last week, averaging 29 yards per rush attempt.
Neither Milton or Craig made the playoffs last year, but under first-year coaches, they each made quite an impression in Week 1. Milton and new head man Dan Prahl put a running clock on Watertown out of halftime in a 45-7 win, while Craig and new coach Joe Brannan dominated Sun Prairie West 42-8.
