Week 1 WisSports.net Football Coaches Poll
Please note, divisional placement in our poll is based on our Enrollment Projections done earlier this year. Divisional placement in the WIAA playoffs is not determined until after the season and these projections can and will be different than the divisions at the end of the year.
After taking down defending champion Marquette in the opening game of the year, Arrowhead gets the edge as the number one team in the first Division 1 Coaches Poll of the season. Classic Eight rivals Muskego and Mukwonago are second and fourth, respectively. Kimberly couldn't find an opponent in Week 1 but is third in the rankings. Franklin is fifth, with Marquette narrowly in the poll at number ten.
Defending champion Badger rallied to defeat Greendale in Week 1 and enters as the top-ranked squad in the WSN Division 2 Coaches Poll. Rice Lake, the champion in D2 last year that is elevated due to Tournament Performance Factor points, is second. River Falls, West De Pere, and Germantown round out the top five.
With defending champion Rice Lake elevated to Division 2, the top-ranked Division 3 squad to open the season is Notre Dame, who was impressive in a 16-13 win over Kaukauna in Week 1. Catholic Memorial is second, despite a competitive loss against Franklin. Mount Horeb/Barneveld is third. Last year's runner-up Grafton fell to Cedarburg to open the season but is fourth in the initial WisSports.net Coaches Poll.
West Salem opened the year with an impressive win over Onalaska and is the top-ranked team to begin the season. Three-time defending Division 5 champ Aquinas is elevated to D4 this year and is ranked second. Xavier is third, with defending champion Lodi the fourth-ranked squad. Columbus is fifth.
It was a crowded vote in Division 5, but Wrightstown received the most votes and is ranked first to begin the year. Two-time defending state champion Stratford makes the move from D6 to D5 due to Tournament Performance Factor points, and the Tigers are second in this initial poll. A strong opening performance by Darlington has them in third, with Saint Mary's Springs in fourth. Kiel appears set to drop down from D4 to D5 and is fifth this week.
Mondovi holds a narrow edge in the initial Division 6 poll, with Cloverbelt rival Regis second. Auburndale, Grantsburg, and Reedsville round out the top five in Division 6.
Defending state champion Edgar dominates the vote in Division 7, with Potosi/Cassville second. Iola-Scandinavia is third, while in our projections, Kenosha St. Joseph drops from D6 to D7 and should be a strong threat, ranked fourth. Last year's runners-up Black Hawk/Warren (IL) dropped the opening game to Southwestern/East Dubuque (IL), but hangs in the rankings at number ten.
8-Player teams begin action this week, as it is just an eight-game season. McDonell Central enters the season as the number one team in the coaches poll, followed by Gilman, Thorp, North Crawford, and defending champion Florence.
