Neither Milton or Craig made the playoffs last year, but under first-year coaches, they each made quite an impression in Week 1.
Milton and new head man Dan Prahl put a running clock on Watertown out of halftime in a 45-7 win, with a dominating defensive performance that limited Watertown to 104 yards of offense.
Janesville Craig and new coach Joe Brannan dominated Sun Prairie West 42-8. The Cougars rushed for 285 yards in the contest, led by 144 and three touchdowns from Braden Tyler.
"It's a great test in order to be prepared for Big Eight Conference play," said Craig coach Joe Brannan, when asked about this week's matchup. "With a program like Milton, you know you're going to get a physical, well-coached team to get you ready for conference games."
Craig has been off the pace in the Big Eight in recent seasons, with the last playoff appearance in 2021 and no playoff wins since 1999. The Cougars have been working hard to change things around.
"We have had a tremendous off-season," said Brannan. "Starting back in the spring with lifting, and carrying over into the summer contact days all the way through pre-season practices. Our kids have been pushed and challenged more than ever before, and they just keep answering the call and showing up and getting better."
This week offers another challenge for Craig as they prepare for conference play coming up soon.
"Milton is a good team that poses some problems that we've been working on all week," explained Brannan. "Their passing attack led by senior quarterback Tyler Zeal and senior receiver Vinny Churchwell is dynamic, and will take a collective effort from our defense to stop."
