We asked, you voted, and Menomonie at Hudson has been selected as the Kwik Trip and Wisconsin Dairy Game of the Week for Week 3 of the high school football season. A total of 5,737 votes were cast, as this one received 1,751 of those votes.
The Kwik Trip & Wisconsin Dairy Game of the Week allows you, the fans, to pick what you feel is the biggest high school football game in the state each week. Not only will that game get featured on WisSports.net, but our WSN staff will make it our destination that week, with updates, photos, videos, and stories from the big game.
And of course, no trip to a big game in Wisconsin would be complete without a stop or two at Kwik Trip and a chocolate milk!!
It was a good start to the season for both these squads, who have developed quite the rivalry over the last couple decades. Hudson has gotten the best of Menomonie in recent years, winning four straight in the matchup, including the game last year when the Raiders claimed an outright Big Rivers Conference title.
With non-conference games complete, it's time to move on to conference action this week.
"We always talk about the huge jump we need to make from Week 1 to Week 2, and we feel like we did that last week," said Menomonie head coach Mike Sinz. "I think our players and coaches knew we did not play up to our standards in our first game against Eau Claire North. We had way too many missed opportunities. We had a great week of practice last week and it showed against Marshfield."
It's been a couple weeks of trying to get things in alignment in Hudson as well.
"We saw some really good stuff to build on but we still have quite a bit of work to do," said Raiders coach Adam Kowles. "We need to limit the mistakes going forward to be the team that we want to be."
With this game kicking off the conference schedule, it brings a heightened level of excitement between these programs and communities.
"The Menomonie/Hudson rivalry has been a rivalry of streaks over the past 35+ years," explained Kowles. "I think Menomonie won over 20 games in a row up until 2008. Then Hudson won seven straight games over Menomonie. Then from 2015-2019 Menomonie won five games in a row. And now Hudson has beaten Menomonie the past four years."
Ultimately, it is a rivalry full of respect on both sides.
"It's been a great rivalry over the years," Sinz said. "I think both of these teams bring out the best in each other."
