This is the first season for Ithaca in the Scenic Bluffs Conference, a league that has terrorized the Bulldogs in the playoffs quite often over the years. However, the team is off to a 4-0 start this year, including a 14-10 win over Scenic Bluffs heavyweight and several time playoff nemesis Bangor last week. Now, the Bulldogs get Cashton, another one of the top teams in the league who has won three straight since a surprising opening loss to Wauzeka/Seneca. The Eagles have won the last two outright Scenic Bluffs titles.
Both teams are unbeaten in the Middle Border Conference through two weeks, with Baldwin-Woodville leading the state in scoring this season. Last week, Baldwin-Woodville rolled up 664 yards of offense, including 520 on the ground, as Taden Holldorf ran for 331 yards and six scores. Ellsworth has won three in a row since a tough 22-21 loss to La Crosse Logan.
It's Gang Green in this one, as both teams are off to 2-0 records in the Woodland Conference, allowing a total of just 21 points between them. Each has won three straight since opening the year with non-conference losses, Greenfield against Columbus and Greendale against Badger.
These were expected to be two of the better teams in the SWC this year, and Lancaster has lived up to its end of the bargain, starting 2-0 in conference play. However, Platteville has been an enigma. Coming off a conference title last year, the Hillmen were shutout the first two games before erupting for 49 points in a Week 3 win over Brodhead/Juda. But in last week's game, Platteville suffered a 41-13 blowout loss to Prairie du Chien. This is the 96th meeting between these Grant County rivals, with Platteville holding a slim 48-45-2 overall advantage dating back to the first meeting in 1902.
Both of these teams have struggled quite a bit over the years, and often at the same time. In fact, you have to go back to 1984 the last time they made the playoffs in the same season. But with WFCA Hall of Famer Tom Swittel back for a second stint at Tosa East and Nick Vitale leading the way at Tosa West, things are pointing up for both squads. A win by Tosa East would put the Red Raiders in a strong position to make their first playoff appearance since 2007.
