A matchup involving two defending state champions, one being Aquinas and one coming out of the Capitol Conference. We've seen this movie before, as last year Aquinas downed Columbus, who had won the D4 title in 2022, in the Division 5 playoffs. This time, Aquinas is elevated to Division 4, where they'll meet up with last year's champion Lodi, who went 6-3 in the regular season and defeated Wisconsin Dells last week.
This is a contrast in many ways, as Milwaukee Academy of Science makes the trip across southern Wisconsin to take on Darlington in a Division 5 playoff game. Academy of Science just won its first playoff game in its third appearance, while Darlington has 83 postseason wins in 36 appearances, including 13 title game appearances. Academy of Science features a dynamic spread attack that does plenty of damage on the ground and through the air, while Darlington is a heavy run-based attack built on physical football.
Third-seeded Neenah will make the trip to second-seeded Kimberly. The teams met in Neenah earlier this year, with the Rockets rallying for a 29-28 victory on a last second field goal by Jack Klundt. It was the first victory for Neenah over Kimberly since 2005, and helped forge a three-way tie for the FVA title along with Kaukauna.
Stanley-Boyd was second in the Cloverbelt Conference this year, behind Regis. Northwestern finished second in the Heart O'North behind Saint Croix Falls. The teams are a combined 17-3 this season, and this is one of the better two- versus three-seed matchups on the schedule this weekend.
We can only hope this one is as exciting as the last time these teams met up, when La Crosse Logan scored a 36-35 overtime victory. Logan had a chance to win it in regulation, but a potential game-winning field goal in the closing seconds was no good. On the first overtime possession, Onalaska scored and kicked the extra point to go ahead. Logan answered with a touchdown of its own, and went for two and the win, with Bradley Check powering in for the conversion.
