Notre Dame was ranked number one all year and Grafton spent a good portion of the season in the top three of the Coaches Poll as well, and these are two of the top five teams in D3 by almost any estimation, but meet in Level 3. Grafton is coming off a 35-13 win over Port Washington, while Grafton downed Plymouth 31-21.
Kaukauna and West De Pere are in separate conferences, but this will be the sixth time they've played since August of 2022. In that 2022 season, West De Pere beat Kaukauna twice, including the state semi-finals. Last year, it was Kaukauna's turn to sweep the Phantoms. Back in Week 2 of this season, Kaukauna won a 35-31 thriller. West De Pere junior quarterback Patrick Greisen put together an excellent regular season, but he has been absolutely unreal in the playoffs, with back-to-back 500-yard passing performances, including 13 touchdown throws the last two weeks.
These teams met back in Week 6 in what turned out to be an instant classic. New Richmond trailed 22-13 heading into the fourth quarter, but rallied for a 23-22 victory as Abraham Monson booted a 27-yard field goal for the go-ahead points. New Richmond's win helped them score an outright Big Rivers title, as they are still undefeated. Rice Lake is looking to stay alive in the Division 2 playoffs after winning last season's D3 title and begin elevated by Tournament Performance Factor points.
Back in 2018, these teams met up in Level 3 of the playoffs, both undefeated at the time. Grantsburg's Leo Chenal put on a performance for the ages (42 carries, 233 yards, 4 total TD, 22 tackles) in a 31-29 win, though they'd fall to Iola-Scandinavia the following week. Things have certainly been more difficult for Regis in the playoffs than anticipated, as they narrowly survived against Fall Creek in Level 1, blocking a field goal to hold on 29-8, then outlasting Luther 17-14 last week.
These teams met for control of the Dunn-St. Croix Conference in Week 8, with Spring Valley winning an instant classic 19-18, handing Boyceville its only loss of the season. Cade Stasiek ran in a six-yard touchdown with just 1:19 left in that one, then hit Caleb Bartko for the game-winning two-point conversion.
