Cloverbelt West Girls Basketball Preview

2023-24 Recap

McDonell Central (26-3 overall) and Fall Creek (24-4) were co-champions of the Cloverbelt West, splitting their meetings. The teams met again in a Division 4 sectional final with McDonell Central posting a 58-38 victory. In a state semifinal, the Macks were topped by eventual WIAA D4 state runner-up Cuba City, 48-45. The number three spot went to Regis (21-6) which posted a 10-4 record while Osseo-Fairchild (14-12, 8-6) and Bloomer (12-14, 6-8) made up the middle of the pack. Cadott (11-14, 3-11), Stanley-Boyd (3-22, 2-12), and Thorp (3-22, 1-13) closed out the league standings.

Players to Watch

Carly Borst, sr., Regis – Borst, a 5-9 wing, averaged 13.7 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per contest last season, receiving second-team all-Cloverbelt West. 

EllaMay Cooper, soph., Regis – Cooper, a 5-6 point guard, was named first-team all-conference as a freshman, averaging 14.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 3.5 steals per game for McDonell Central. 

Taylor Hager, jr., Cadott – Hager, a 5-4 point guard, averaged 10.3 points, 3.6 assists, and 2.6 steals per game last season. 

Jasmin Heuer, jr., Fall Creek – Heuer, a 5-11 wing, was named first-team all-Cloverbelt West and honorable mention WBCA all-state last season after averaging 9.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.4 steals per game. 

Brooke Petska, jr., Bloomer – Petska averaged 9.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.0 steals per game last season, earning second-team all-conference. She also connected on a team-high 49 three-pointers. 

Anne Siegenthaler, soph., McDonell Central – Siegenthaler, a 6-0 forward, will take on a more prominent role this season after averaging 5.9 points and 2.0 steals per game as a freshman for the D4 state qualifiers. 

Kennedy Tumm, sr., Fall Creek – Tumm, a 5-6 point guard, tallied 6.1 points and 2.8 assists per contest last season, receiving second-team all-Cloverbelt West. 

2024-25 Team Previews 

1) Fall Creek welcomes back three starters from its squad which claimed a share of the Cloverbelt West title and one win away from the WIAA State Tournament, falling to McDonell Central after splitting regular-season meetings, and finishing the season with a 24-4 record. Jason Martzke, who has a 420-188 record in 25 years as a head coach, is 288-151 in 18 years at Fall Creek which includes three trips to the state tournament. Coach Martzke told WisSports.net that experience, balanced scoring, and basketball IQ are strengths, while post-defense, lack of size, and rebounding are weaknesses. Jasmin Heuer, an honorable mention WBCA all-state selection last season, headlines the Crickets’ roster. Two other starters are back, including point guard Kennedy Tumm. The Crickets could play Regis three times again this season; they open the year as the top two teams in Division 4 Sectional 1. Fall Creek opens the season at home against Heart O’North favorite Cameron (Nov. 21) followed by traveling to Dunn. St. Croix favorite Elk Mound (Nov. 26). The Crickets’ first meeting against Regis is December 17 at home.

2) Regis will reload its roster after the graduation of four seniors from last year’s team that finished 10-4 in the conference and advanced to a Division 4 sectional before falling to league foe Fall Creek, ending the season 21-6 overall. Teddy Joas, who has a 56-41 record in four years at the helm, told WSN that experience and growth together as a program is a strength along with point guard play. “[We] will possess multiple scoring threats.” Coach Joas said that finding hard-working role players will be key. Carly Borst, second on the team in scoring and rebounding last season, highlights the returning group. The Ramblers got a big boost with the addition of EllaMay Cooper, a McDonell Central transfer, who helped the Macks reach the state tournament last season. Regis figures to battle Fall Creek for not just the conference title but for a trip to state, entering the season as the favorites in Division 4 Sectional 1. The Ramblers host Colfax in a non-conference game on opening night (November 19) and open Cloverbelt West action at home versus McDonell Central on December 3.

3) McDonell Central will be in a transition year after the loss of its starting five from last year’s team which won a share of the Cloverbelt West title and reached the Division 4 WIAA State Tournament, ending the season with a 26-3 record. The Macks hired Sally Williams, who was most recently an assistant women’s basketball coach at UW-Eau Claire, to replace Don Cooper, who spent 12 years as head coach. Anne Siegenthaler heads up the group of returning players for the Macks.

4) Bloomer graduated four starters from last year’s team which finished 6-8 in the Cloverbelt West and 12-14 overall. The Blackhawks had a change at the top in the offseason with Josh Hartman named to replace Nikki Seibel, who stepped down after 10 seasons (158-83 record) to become an assistant women’s basketball coach at UW-Eau Claire. Brooke Petska, second on the team in scoring last season, is the lone returning starter for the Blackhawks.

5) Cadott returns three starters from its 2023-24 team which finished 3-11 in the league and 11-14 overall. The Hornets will need to replace last year’s leading scorer Emma Kowalczyk, and adjust to a new head coach with Dusty Burish, former boys’ coach at Cadott, taking over the program. Coach Burish told lSN that varsity experience is a strength. Taylor Hager, second on the team in scoring and team leader in assists and steals last season, leads the group of returning players.
