1. Sheboygan Lutheran

Addy Verhagen, the team leader in points, assists, and steals last season, leads the way for the Crusaders while fellow senior Taylor Brigham, a D-III UW-La Crosse recruit who was second on the team in most categories, joins Verhagen as a top returnee. Sheboygan Lutheran dropped to Division 5 this season and was placed in Sectional 4 in the same half-sectional as Lourdes Academy while defending Division 5 state champion Albany/Monticello is on the side of the sectional. The Crusaders’ schedule is highlighted by their conference games against Oostburg, which will enter the year as one of the top teams in D3. Notable non-conference games include St. Mary Catholic (Dec. 20) and Kewaunee (Jan. 7). 

2. Assumption 
Coach: Ryan Klein, 9th year - 151-60 record

Sarah Shaw, the reigning Marawood South Player of the Year who led the team in scoring and was among the state leaders in steals per game last season, headlines Assumption’s roster. Joining Shaw as top returnees are Jordyn Jaglinski, a D-II Augustana recruit who was fifth in the state in 3-pointers made last season, and Anna Schooley, the team’s leader in rebounds and blocks. Assumption will be competing in Sectional 2 this season and are in the same half-sectional as Pacelli while the other side’s top team is Lena, the D5 state runner-up last season. The Royals have notable non-league contests versus Pacelli (Jan. 3), Neillsville (Feb. 3), and Aquinas (Feb. 18). 

3. Albany/Monticello
Coach: Derik Doescher, 20th season | 166-43 as the girls’ coach
Returning Starters: Abby Hollis (5-6, sr., 11.8 ppg, 67 3PM, 3 apg),  Dalana Trumpy (5-8, sr., 10 ppg, 5.5 rpg), Molly Olson (5-4, jr., 9.2 ppg, 42 3PM, 2.4 apg), Anna Ellinger (5-9, sr., 6.3 ppg, 5.4 rpg)

NAIA Clarke University recruit Abby Hollis, second on the team in scoring last season, will take on a leading role. Other top returnees for the defending D5 state champions are Dalana Trumpy and Molly Olson. Albany/Monticello, initially promoted to Division 4 in the first year of the Competitive Balance Plan, won their appeal and will remain in Division 5. The Space Stallions are the clear favorite in their half of Division 5, Sectional 4, while Sheboygan Lutheran and Lourdes Academy are the top teams in the other half. Albany/Monticello has notable non-conference games against Turner (Nov. 22), Belleville (Nov. 25), and Madison East (Feb. 8). 

4. Lena 
Coach: Tim Goldschmidt, 21st year - 193-280 overall | 109-162 in 11 years as the girls’ coach at Lena 
Returning Starters: Eva Brooks (6-1, sr., 19.8 ppg, 12.1 rpg, 3.5 apg, 2.7 spg, 3.3 spg), Madi Thomson (5-10, jr., 15.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 3.3 apg, 3 spg, 1.2 bpg), Kali Fischer (5-5, sr., 9.1 ppg, 2 apg, 2.7 spg), Hannah Thomson (5-5, sr., 3 ppg, 2.1 apg)

Reigning Marinette & Oconto Player Eva Brooks, a D-II Winona State recruit, headlines the roster for the Wildcats. Another top returnee is Madi Thomson, who provides Lena with another scoring option at the top. Lena is the team to beat in its half of Sectional 2 which includes Wabeno/Laona while the other half features Assumption (sectional finalist in Sectional 4 last season) and Pacelli. Lena opens its season against Marinette, last year’s North Eastern champion, on November 19. They also have a notable non-league contest versus Crando on November 29. 

5. Pacelli 
Coach: Allison Smaglik, 2nd year - 24-2 record 
Returning Starters: Jaedyn Zdroik (5-10, soph., 18.3 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 3.3 apg, 4.8 spg), Ella Van Order (5-9, jr., 8.6 ppg), Kaylin Yenter (5-9, sr., 8.5 ppg), Katy Ilkka (5-5, sr.)

Jaedyn Zdroik, the team leader in points, steals, and steals last season, highlights the group of returnees for the Cardinals. Pacelli will get tested the first week of the season when they face Cuba City (D4 state runner-up last season) at the Beaver Dam Classic on November 23. The Cardinals also have notable non-league contests versus Assumption (away, Jan. 3). Wittenberg-Birnamwood (away, Feb. 3), and St. Mary Catholic (home, Feb. 18). Pacelli, looking for its first WIAA state tournament appearance in program history, is in the same half-sectional as Pittsville and Assumption (finalist in Sectional 4 last season). The other half of the sectional features Lena, last year’s state runner-up. 

6. Lourdes Academy 
Coach: Ali Starr 10th year - 176-48 record 
Returning Starters: Hailee Bauer (5-7, sr., 18.4 ppg, 81 3PM, 4.7 apg, 4.2 spg), Delaney Ruedinger (5-9, sr., 12.4 ppg, 2.9 apg, 2.8 spg), Aubrey Schettle (5-7, jr., 6.9 ppg),

Headlining the roster is three-time Trailways East Player of the Year Hailee Bauer, who led the team in scoring and was among the state leaders in 3-pointers made (81). Another top returnee for the Knights is Delaney Ruedinger, who was second in most statistical categories. Lourdes Academy is looking for its second WIAA State Tournament appearance in program history. The Knights’ first trip was in 2012 with current head coach Ali Starr coaching the team to a Division 4 state runner-up finish in her first coaching stint at Lourdes Academy. The Knights’ sectional, Sectional 4 in Division 5, is strong again this year despite Assumption, a sectional finalist last season, moving to Sectional 2. Sheboygan Lutheran joins their half-sectional after competing in Division 4, reaching a sectional final before falling to Laconia (winners of the last two D4 state titles). The other half-sectional has defending D5 state champion Albany/Monticello. Lourdes Academy has an early season test against St. Mary Catholic, a Division 4 sectional qualifier, on December 2. 

7. Pittsville
Coach: Jason Knott, 6th year - 70-32 overall | 24-5 in one year at Pittsville

Pittsville has an early season test against perennial power Neillsville on November 26. 

8. Barneveld 
Coach: Jim Myers, 39th year - 699-138 record

WBCA Hall of Fame coach Jim Myers, the second-winningest coach in girls’ basketball state history) returns for a second stint as the Golden Eagles' head coach. He compiled a 699-138 record with six WIAA state titles (2nd-most titles in girls’ basketball state history) in 38 years at the helm. Izabel Durst, the second-leading scorer in the Six Rivers East last season, headlines the Golden Eagles’ lineup. Barneveld has notable non-league against Platteville (Nov. 19), Belleville (Nov. 21), Mineral Point (Dec. 31), Edgerton (Jan. 10), and Prairie du Chien (Jan. 18). 

9. Oakfield 
Coach: Steven Gross 1st year

10. Shullsburg

​​The Miners will get a huge boost from their freshman class, headlined by Hailey Alt and McKinley Russell who are expected to lead the program. Taylor Russell and Olivia Brown, finishing second and third, respectively in scoring, are the team’s top holdovers from last season. Shullsburg is in the same half-sectional as Barneveld. The Miners’ non-conference schedule includes Barneveld, a team they have never beaten in girls’ basketball, on December 20. They also have notable non-league games against Bangor (Dec. 27), Argyle/Pecatonica (Jan. 7), Assumption (Feb. 8 at JAG), and Albany/Monticello (Feb. 14).
