Edgar's Will Hackel goes in for a touchdown in the Wildcats' Division 7 title game victory

Defense, special teams, field position, and turnovers carried the day as Edgar defeated Potosi/Cassville 19-0 to claim the WIAA Division 7 state championship game at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison.

The Wildcats dominated the scoreboard despite just 119 yards of offense on the day. The defense was stout, limiting Potosi/Cassville to 158 yards, while forcing a pair of turnovers. Special teams were an advantage as well, as Potosi/Cassville averaged more than 36 yards per punt and converted a fake field goal in the fourth quarter for a touchdown.

The win gives Edgar and head coach Jerry Sinz a WIAA record-tying ninth state championship and 101st playoff victory. The Wildcats repeat at Division 7 champs but will move up to Division 6 due to the WIAA's Tournament Performance Factor next season.

Edgar got on the board quickly, converting a Potosi/Cassville fumble into a ten yard Will Hackel touchdown run just two plays later for a 6-0 advantage less than two minutes into the game.

Potosi/Cassville struggled to get much going, and a punt later in the first quarter was partially blocked by Edgar, giving the Wildcats prime position once again. Maverick Butt scored three plays later on a 12-yard touchdown run and the team took a 12-0 lead, which they'd hold into halftime.

The second half was much the same as the first, with neither offense able to string consistent gains together. Potosi/Cassville turned the ball over on downs on its first two possessions of the second half, while Edgar punted the first three times it had the ball.

Trailing 12-0 and needing to make something happen, Potosi/Cassville turned it over with just under four minutes remaining when Gavin Mauer intercepted a Dawson Weber pass over the middle.

Edgar was inside the red zone, and after Potosi/Cassville's defense came up big, Edgar converted a fake field goal for a score when Tucker Streit hit Maverick Butt on a two-handed chest pass, with Butt going in for an eight yard score.

The 277 yards of combined offense set a new Division 7 state finals record for fewest total yards.

Edgar was led in rushing by Maverick Butt, who managed just 45 yards on 16 carries. He also caught a touchdown and completed a ten yard pass.

Isaiah Groom was the top rusher for Potosi/Cassville with 77 yards on 17 carries. Joe Haas added 56 yards on 17 carries. Groom had an outstanding game from his linebacker spot with nine tackles, including eight solo stops.
