Lomira coach Bryan Gregory hoists the Division 6 state championship trophy
Lomira claimed its first state title with a 26-19 win over Grantsburg in the WIAA Division 6 championship game on Thursday afternoon.
The Lions trailed early, as Grantsburg took the opening drive of the game and drove 56 yards in 11 plays, capped off by a one-yard Ian Burkman scoring plunge.
Lomira answered back, going on an 80-yard drive that saw Taylor Schaumberg go in for the first of his three touchdowns, this one from 33 yards out. The teams traded possessions until Lomira got a second score on the board, another 32-yard run from Schaumberg with just under a minute remaining in the first half.
Lomira extended its lead to 20-7 on the opening possession of the second half with a six-play, 73-yard scoring drive that saw Jackson Goebel find Sam Schraufnagel for a four-yard touchdown.
Grantsburg got points on the board later in the third quarter, but settled for a 31-yard field goal from All-State kicker Alex McCormick when an eight-play drive fizzled out in the red zone.
Early in the fourth quarter, Taylor Schaumberg punched in a six-yard touchdown, but in a key sequence, the extra point was no good and it allowed Grantsburg to remain within two scores at 26-10.
Grantsburg would get two scores, but after an Ian Burkman two-yard touchdown, the Pirates failed on the two-point conversion, meaning it remained a two-score game. The Grantsburg defense forced a punt on the next Lomira drive, which turned into a rush attempt when the Lions punter tried to avoid a block.
Taking over at midfield, Grantsburg drove into the red zone again, but the Pirates once again were forced into a field goal attempt, which McCormick booted through from 29 yards out.
Armed with three timeouts, Grantsburg did attempt an onside kick with 2:15 remaining in the game, but Lomira recovered it and was able to pick up two, first downs on the back of Ian Burkman runs, icing the game and the team's first title.
Taylor Schaumberg had a big game, rushing 29 times for 216 yards and three touchdowns. Jackson Goebel completed seven-of-ten passes for 73 yards and a touchdown to Sam Schraufnagel, who led the team with four catches for 47 yards.
Ian Burkman scored a pair of touchdowns but was limited to 68 yards on 22 carries. Brock Matheny set new Division 6 state finals records with 283 yards, 24 completions, and 37 attempts.
